Default Starter motor

Over the past few weeks, when starting my 97 V70 auto (especially from cold) there is a very loud brief 'shriek' from the engine bay. The car starts fine, runs well and through the day will then behave perfectly.

I had the chance for a bit of a closer look today, and I'm sure that the noise is coming from the starter motor - presumably it isn't disengaging properly once the engine fires up.

My question is, would it be worth removing the starter motor for a clean and lube, or would I be as well simply obtaining a replacement? If a replacement is needed, how much should I be paying?

Accoding to Haynes it's a fairly simple job - although reading threads on here I'll need to remove the battery tray, airbox and cooling fan etc, which looks to complicate things a tad. Does the fact that the car is an auto make any difference?

The car has 200,000 miles up, and is otherwise running well.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Guess I picked a quiet day when I posted this originally!

Anyone got any thoughts?

Cheers

I did mine a few years ago and I certainly didn't have to remove the battery tray. The cooling fan is easyand the whole job took a few hours. Not hard, just awkward in places.

Did the starter motor cure the problem as my V70 has just started with the same noise?

Thanks

Don't know is the short answer! With the weather as it is I haven't had chance to do anything about it, although the noise seems to have gone away of its own accord!

Cheers
