Possible Fuel Pump Not Working
Hi There,
I have a 2002 S60 2.4 D5 and it takes a long time to start. It cranks over fine (new-ish starter motor and good battery) but much longer than it used to. The time to start is longer the less fuel in the tank and when warm or just switched off, will start on a couple of cranks. I have checked the heater plugs and they SEEM fine; they all heat up and glow but this takes a little time (the heater light on the dash goes out very quickly). If I turn the ignition on and count 10 seconds, this makes no difference to the number of times it cranks over. Am I correct in thinking there is a problem with the in-tank fuel pump? (Checked the fuse and it is still in tact.) If so, is it a tricky job? By way of background, the car has done 228,000 miles. Regularly serviced by Volvo up to 200,000 (I've continued to change oil and filters regularly. Pads, discs, bushes etc. as necessary.) Once going still sits at 80 to 85 smoke free, with plenty of 'poke' and I don't think I've ever top up the oil between changes. A great car, indeed! Any information greatly received. Cheers Austin |

I think an injector leak back test is probably a good idea at this point. Cars of that vintage could develop a leaking injector which makes cold starts very troublesome. Loads of threads here about it with links to vids on how to.

Hi Brendan,
Ran a leak-back test today. Cylinders 1,2,3 & 5 leaked back 5ml in a minute/ 10ml in two mins. Cylinder 4 leaked back 10ml in a minute and 20ml in two. They seem okay to me; is this correct? Does this point more to the tank pump? Cheers Austin |

Looks Ok.
40cc or ml per minute at idle is the 'going rate' If you had a bad one you would be in no doubt. Before going after pumps I would be inclined to eliminate easier/cheaper fixes. Is the big earth from the block ok? Mine let go last year, no corrosion, clean cut like fatigue of the strands just at the lug below the starter. |

Would a broken earth strap cause problems like mine?
