Notchy Second Gear
Especially (though not exclusively) when cold, moving from first to second gear in our 2008 D5 XC70 can require a bit of extra force to move the shifter through the gates (very notchy shift). It's particularly obvious because all the other shifts are so smooth.
Does anyone else recognise this feature of the car? I guess at 88,000 miles, 1st to 2nd gear shifts may have taken their toll on the syncro and 1st to 2nd is one of the larger leaps in the box. Maybe a transmission oil change might help? Cheers, iep |

My 2011 D3 manual is like that, done 65k and it's always been a bit notchy 1st to 2nd. Gets more noticeable as the weather cools off. I don't see it as a concern.

Hi Tommy,
Thanks for the post. Yes, I suspect it could be normal and not really an issue. Only reason it is a pain is because first gear is so very short in the D5 XC70 but 2nd is just a bit too high to pull away in. So, when you need to pull away speedily, you have this awkwardish shift to make. I realise the manual box is generally considered 'sealed for life' but wondered if an oil change (with genuine Volvo stuff) might be worth a shot. Other than the cost, I don't see how it could hurt. Cheers, iep |

I considered the same regarding oil change in the gearbox, don't see how it could do any harm! Might ask my dealer when it goes in for a service in a couple of months.
