Default 2.5T using lots of oil on 4hr+ journeys

Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this has been discussed before, the search system for this forum isn't just confusing, it is also rather poor.

We happily own an 08 V70 2.5T with just 50K on the clock. General use is just a commute through Sheffield (not ideal for this car, I know) but five or six times a year we take it for a long drive on holiday. Usually this involves a 6-7 hour non-stop to the North of Scotland. On the M1/A1 I tend to drive... non-conservatively, but once we get to the A-roads (most of the journey) it is usually 50-70 all the way.

In the last year, on previous trips, I noticed that we had to refill oil once we had reached our destination (Oil Level Low notification coming on dash). Not thinking too much of it the first two times I just refilled it while up in Scotland. This time however I thought I'd beat it, by checking and topping up before going to Scotland, to my surprise it still resulted in having to refill in Scotland... it had used approximately 2 litres of oil on a six hour trip.

There is no evidence of smoke, no drips on the drive or anything like that but I am pretty sure it is not supposed to use this much oil on one trip...

any advice?

I had a 06 2.5t, and on some, not all, trips it would do as you describe. I had the car for three trouble free years and never found out why.

Have you checked the PCV Valve Operation?

Do a quick google search on Volvo Oil Consumption PCV and you may find something interesting.

There's a how-to guide here:

and more info here

Thanks for the replies, *I don't think* it is the PCV, there is no evidence at all of oil-leakage anywhere on or around the engine and I tested for excessive smoke from the exhaust at high revs (in Neutral) and there was nothing.

I haven't checked deeper in the engine though, so I'll give that a go this afternoon.

My last T5 was similar. I could do a long journey and it would use no oil. I could then do the same journey and use a litre of oil in 400 miles. There were no PCV indications but I replaced the entire system anyway. It was still the same and the engine always ran perfectly and never smoked.
