Default 1800s Luggage Straps

I have just bought a set of leather aftermarket luggage straps for my 1966 1800s, but cannot recall whether the buckles were attached to the lower or upper mounting points. Also, both buckle and strap seem long enough to fit around a horse's girth, so I will need to shorten them. What were the length of the originals? Thanks

The open eye should be at the top. Hence the clip hooks on at the top. So when not in use the straps fall to the floor.
Hope that answers.

Thought I had the length data for the straps, but no. I do know the ES models had longer straps than the coupe. Maybe you received those?
