Default second hand tyres

What do you guys say or is anyone in the know about second hand tyres? Both me and the gf are not big money earners, and she needs a new spare, i thought of a second hand tyre, my mum pipes in saying that part worns invalidate your insurance.

Do they and how would they know if you got caught with it? Its just another tyre isnt it?

cant see any harm I've used part worns a few times, even had too put a couple on to pass a failed MOT, can also get re-treads which for a spare would be ok.

If the aim is to get you home or to a proper tyre place that can fit a genuine tyre then that seems okay. Anything more and then personally I would not. Treat it as a space save only.

Some of these part worn tyre places have some pretty good tyres in. If I could find a good set, I would use them. New tyres are bloody expensive.

Way I see it is every 2nd hand car you buy has 'part worn' tyres on it. The new owner has no idea how they've been treated. Probably some people do it but how many new owners change the tyres on their new 2nd hand car????
As long as the fitters have a good reputation for quality tyres I wouldn't think twice about getting them.

And here is the whole thing thoroughly check them they should also be stamped to say they are part worn tyres with pressure testing look for obvious defects etc.

As for invalidating insurance if they are of the correct specification and legal then no your insurance should not be invalid what so ever.

Thing is, though, if the used tyre is on a second-hand car, and the car appears to have been well looked after, then the tyre is probably fine. But if it's not on a car, why not? Was it replaced on the car, and if so, why? Now, it may well have been taken off for a perfectly good reason, in which case no problem - but can you be sure? So then I guess it depends how much you trust the supplier...
