2002 XC70 value advice
Hi,
I have a 2016 V40 but looking for some advice about a 2002 XC70. A friend of mine who is a widow with mobility issues has a XC70. This she can now no longer drive. It is a 2.4 diesel Aluminium/silver , the bodywork is in vgc as it’s been well looked after. The mileage is 117,512. Owned from new. There has been 2 people that has knocked on her door saying they are keen to buy it . Can anyone give at least a ballpark figure of what it could be worth. Thanks Ken |

Ref your friends car. A lot will depend on the MOT, service history, any probs at the moment and when the cam belt, water pump, serpentine belt and tensioner were last replaced. If it’s an auto, has the gearbox been serviced and is the 4wd working ok? If all good, I would hope you could get somewhere around £2000 or more if in top condition. If not, slightly less depending what needs doing. Good car if we’ll maintained, cheap motoring too and very low mileage for the year. I am now waiting to be shot down for sticking my head above the parapet. Hope this helps and good luck. |

Far from 'shooting you down', 'palwing', I would agree that £1.5-2K would be about right, depending, as you say, on condition. As a one-owner, low-mileage example, I would expect it to be towards the upper end of that range.
It is widely accepted that WBAC usually bid low as they offer you a hassle free way of selling an unwanted car, which may well make it attractive to someone wanting a quick sale without any fuss. Secondly, I would be very wary of those who 'knock on the door' to ask "do you want to sell that old car?", indicating, in our case, either my V70 and / or my wife's Saab V6 9000, neither of which are for sale! They usually bid very low, pitching just enough above scrap value to make it sound reasonable. Frankly, I would rather give the car away to someone whom I knew would appreciate it, or even sell it to the likes of WBAC, than sell it to the likes of these. Regards, John.

Agreed John. A friend of mine sold his great condition 2006 Saab 9-3 Convertible with cream leather and a working roof to WBAC for £600! If only he had asked me first.
Due to ill health, I had a high mileage 2007 S60 D5 sitting on my drive collecting moss for about 18+ months. A battered recovery truck pulled up one day and 2 guys asked me if I would take £200 for it? Errr….nope. Put some air in the tyres, got it MOT’d with minor advisories and sold it cheap for £1500 on Gumtree. It’s a funny old game. Thanks for not shooting me down by the way. |
