Default Clutch Fluid

I notice that my clutch fluid is low, is there a certain type that I need or is the fluid universal?
Thanks

providing that's what's in the master cylinder already, universal DOT4 is what to use - and if it's been there for a while why bleed all the old fluid out and replace with new?

I've got some dot 4 esp synthetic but I've no idea what's already in there - what's the risk?

best not to mix mineral with synthetic, though i know a number of guys who've done this with no adverse affects. it's really very easy to pump through, bleed, the old fluid...then fill up and bleed with new dot4; job done

Given that I didn't know what fluid to put in, I think that bleeding would have to be "outsourced" ;-)

Are you saying you don't know how to do it? If so, piece of washer pipe on the bleed nipple, other end into a container. Open bleed nipple with suitable spanner, press clutch pedal until you hear the air squirting out. The system is now empty.
Fill the reservoir with your new fluid and pump the pedal, do not let the reservoir empty so top up regularly. When no further air bubbles are seen in the fluid coming out the nipple, close it and try clutch pedal for feel. If OK tidy up and put tools away.
You have now changed the fluid in the clutch system and know what is in there as you put it in.

I take an easier route and use a vacuum bleeder, but that involves expence that may not be acceptable dependant upon how often you are going to use it.

Paul.
