Nightmare air conditioning

Lately I'm have issues with both my volvos air conditioning but today it is the xc90s turn so today i was out in the car switched the aircon on and a hissing started from behind the dash didn't think much of it until i noticed a small amount of ice on the dash vent the hissing did stop but then i switched the car off then started it again the hiss started up again then died down I'm just not sure where to start with it

Hissing sound normally means you are low on refrigerant. You will also start getting fog out of the vents since dehumidification is incomplete.

Great thanks for the info I'll get it booked in for a recharge i didn't think of this as it was still blowing cold thanks again

Since 2010 when the AC laws changed they will have to do a full working pressure ( not vaccum ) leak check and fix that before recharging ...

You would want them to check for leaks anyway, as it's pointless to add refrigerant if it leaks out again. Most shops will do a vacuum check anyway as they want to add the right amount of refrigerant.

XC90 comes with dye so they'll just use a UV lamp to check for leaks. There's probably a leak, and the most likely candidate is a cracked condensor, which is fairly cheap and easy to replace.

I also have the hissing sound on my car but the ac still works?

Correct. It's the first sign. It will work, just not as well as it should. Luckily the XC90 AC system is crazy oversize, with about 4x the refrigerant of a small car.

Hissing, fog and frost out of the vents, but still cooling are signs of low refrigerant.
