I currently have a 940 tdic saloon which I don’t want to get rid of but a wagon would be more practical. I’ve found a 2.3 lpt celebration wagon which is in similar condition and I’m tempted.
Is there anything to look out for with the 2.3lpt? From what I’ve read the engines are great and would be better than the d24 which is a bit of a tractor and has a poor reputation but I kind of like mine.
Fuel consumption isn’t really an issue as I do maybe 5k a year in it if I’m lucky.

2.3LPT is a great engine. Fuel consumption will be pretty bad compared to your diesel but not too bad if you are doing low miles.

Rust if it's lived in Scotlands salted roads.

Give the underside a good look at chassis rails and jacking points and battery tray area. and along the seam on the sills.

I have an LPT auto and it's a nice engine. 135bhp. Can fit a manual boost controller to make it a high pressure turbo model to 165bhp.

Look at the oil filler cap for mayo/oil dipstick and just give it a nice long test drive and make sure temp gauge stays at the mid/12 o clock position.

James.

I have pics of the underside and it’s clean, just waiting on pics of the battery / filter tubs as that’s usually telling.
It will likely get a few mods and bits off my tdic like the hydras and simons exhaust that just arrived

Check for leaks down either side of the engine block underneath the head - the HG's can fail externally. Excessive steam, especially on first start. Rust, as above.
Give the car a wobble and see how it behaves - looking for it wobbling longer than it should and excessive lateral play due to bushings being shot.
