Not just when the just the ac is switched on no.
When the ac is switched on and the compressor is engaged and running too. Look to see if the compressor pulley and clutch plate are turning together.

Cheshired5 thanks for the info,
The compressor is engaging but the fan is not running so me thinks I have a problem will have to investigate tomorrow hopefully it's not fan. You don't happen to know what the silver box on the fan housing is ? I assume that it a control units ? Cheers |

Some cars do put the fan on with the a/c. Mine doesn't.

Excellent question. Spitting rain here now. I'll check tomorrow. Come to think of it I can't remember the last time I heard it run. I check it every year on The Fiat, but a Volvo? Nah!

I'm going to check mine tomorrow if I find time. I've only heard the fan run on the Volvo once during my ownership of it. Stupid efficient diesel.
Edit: well worth checking it with the incoming 30+ Celsius this week. I assume you'll be getting the same in the ROI. |

I believe the fan should be turning at least at slow speed when the A/C compressor is engaging. Reason is, it needs to remove the heat from the A/C evaporator so the refrigerant can cool down. I wonder though if the fan will run right after a start up with a cold engine. Any how, if the A/C blows cold only when the car drives fast, then there might be an issue with the fan controller- the shiny box located on the fan assy. These are known to go bad - two condensers will leak inside. Either replace the controller (cut the wires and solder the new one in place) or the whole fan assy.
