1.6D DRIVe SE 2010 Noise Issue

Hi.
I have a rumbling/vibrating sort of noise that is most noticeable when the engine is labouring but also when driving on rough tarmac. The noise sounds as though it is coming from the rear when in the drivers seat but my wife said it sounded as though it was from under the nearside footwell. My mechanic is a bit baffled, he confirmed the noise was from the front near side but in three road tests is unable to determine the cause.
Any suggestions will be welcome.
