Default D5 185 head gasket replacement

Hi all,

Does anyone have a rough idea on price/hours needed for a head gasket replacement for a 2006 D5 185 for an XC70 using Skimmed head and new genuine Volvo bolts.

Cheers in advance

Volvo standard time is 9.9 hours

What makes you think the Head gasket has " Gone" ? They are multi layer steel plates which cant "go" .. I would expect to find something more serious if there is a leak between head and block ...

There are various thicknesses of gasket depending on the piston heights . you can tell which one you need by the number of punched 4 mm holes on a tab in one corner.. Volvo do not recommend head skimming on a diesel for obvious reasons .. 👍

Thank you!

I’ve been in a year long dispute with a garage I bought my old XC70 from after it lost coolant and Plummer white smoke, this is what they diagnosed it with

Cheers

They won't know until they take the head off , but be wary it could have a cracked cylinder liner at the top where the head seals .

I’m debating if it’s worth taking it and repairing it or not, is a cracker liner a new cylinder head?

No A cracked liner is a new or second hand cylinder block ... worst case scenario of course but worth factoring in ..

Brilliant thank you!

Hopefully it’s not needed, it’s giving me something to think about though
