My gut feeling for anything is that if a specific spec is prescribed and it's available, I'd stick with what's specified. 3309 and 3324 are both available and as near as damn it the same price so I would buy whichever is the official recommendation from Volvo.

3309 was for the previous years changing in 2011 part way through. I dont know about AW1 and 3309 comparability but 2012 is not 3309. 3309 is a standard viscosity fluid whereas AW1 is a low viscosity fluid. so what you are saying is the handbook is wrong ??
