You could spray directly into the Vanes with something like Wynns Turbo Cleaner. There is also a version that you add to the fuel tank. Not overly sure how the fuel version works.

I’ve had a issue recently that causes the actuator to jam, I think causing a boost issue. I believe it’s a different system on cars after 2005. But the effect I had was the same as yours, no power from cold.

Removing cross brace for access and then the inlet hose off the Turbo itself, which looks like it’ll be a bit of a faff, and cleaning each vane soaked with cleaner and agitating with a soft brush before starting up the engine and spraying the rest of the van though on short bursts.

I’m tempted to give the spray version a try after I’ve used the fuel one.

One thing I have done recently is give it an Italian Tune up, something I’ve never done. Locked it in 4th, rolling from 30mph and gunning it to 4K ish revs a few times. The old girl rarely sees over 2500 revs 😆

No , save your money ... the ring which moves the vanes could be cracked .

BUT we are only guessing . No one can say what it is without investigating and actually being there... If the problem is affected by heat it could be a symptom of the vanes .

Tried giving the turbo another clean , but no joy the fault code is back after 30-60 mins now , so maybe it was just a fluke yesterday .

Tried adaptations again , but no luck.

Back to square one....

Yes there is a boost sensor , I will clean the connectors and see if that helps.

volvo sensor plugs have waterproof seals , there wont be corrosion for obvious reasons ... you wont waste your money buying a new one , quite a few on the older volvos have been playing up in the last 4 years ....

Picked up a new boost sensor today , I ended up buying it from a Ford dealer as it was half the price that Volvo wanted , when I opened the box it has Volvo written on it , makes no sense but I guess thats the Australian Volvo tax.

Anyway fitted the new part went for a drive , sadly the fault is still there and I get the dashboard service message .

The next thing on my list to try is do some sort of pressure test from the Turbo to the inlet manifold and see if I can find a leak.

Remove turbo, inspect, clean and refurbish, and refit.

I bought a USB endoscope and had a look at the turbo it looked very clean , I had been spraying Liqui Molley carbon remover into the turbo and letting it run out the bottom hose under the engine.

So i went to the local breakers and did a deal to hire a MAF of a 2012 xc90 just to see if it was a MAF fault , so I put it on and the car and it now runs perfectly, probably helped by cleaning the intake pipe and throttle body .

So it was a MAF fault all along ....

If you'd changed the MAF and done no other opening up and cleaning, that would seem credible.
Get new airflow figures with the MAF at the same rpm as in your early posts to compare.
If they're the same or similar, I can't see how the original MAF sensor would be faulty.
