Default Can Vida disable DRLs?

Hello.
New to XC90 but not new to Volvo, also having a V70 and V50 in the family.
A quick question about Day Running Lights on the XC90.
Can you turn them off using Vida?
I promised the Mrs that I wouldn't do anything to this one in the way of mods or add-ons but ... I've seen a nice looking set of custom fit LED DRLs that fit where the grills are in the front bumper. I can hard wire them in and get them to switch off when the side lights are on, I'd just want the headlights off like I've done on my V70.
This one is a 2010 XC90 D5 AWD with halogen headlights.

Yes, but why would you?

Here in my country it is a 150 GBP fine if you drive with no headlights on.

Thanks for your reply SwissXC90.

Unless it's changed, in the UK DRLs shouldn't be on or should be dimmed if other lights are on. Also I think DRLs show up better than headlights in the day, particularly if a vehicle only has standard halogen bulbs.

I think the dealer only can do it. I don’t think its something you can do from a VIDA laptop at home setup. Some dealerships will disable them, some won’t because its a safety feature.

Its not a legal requirement on your particular vehicle for DRL’s to work, so you can (if you want) disable them. They have to work on vehicles that are 2018 or newer (MOT requirement).

Depending on age I believe that you can fit and have the dealer activate the LED DRL’s that are in place of the fog lights. I have these on our 2012 and the light switch works differently to the older ones. In the 0 position the DRL’s are on when the ignition is on. I. Position 1 the headlights are on unless the DRL button is pressed and then the DRL’ s are on until the day light sensor indicates it’s dark and then try to off and the headlights come on.

I had those retro-fitted to my 2011/12 Exec too.

It's what was fitted as standard on late 2012 models onwards and works nicely.

I believe they would work with earlier models back to 2007.

The kit from Volvo comes with a new switch module as well, but it ain't cheap...

I saw the genuine Volvo ones that replace the fog lights but the ones I'm thinking of go higher up in place of the grills just above the foglights. They aren't genuine Volvo but from the feedback I can see they are CE approved (if you can believe that of anything made in China) and seem to work well. They also include an indicator repeater which cancels the DRL function when indicating.

I managed on my 2010 exec to disable the always on headlights using VIDA. Mine are a xenon type, I wanted to try and put off the eventual renewal with these as they are a bit more expensive to replace. The xenons work great in the dark but I couldn't see the point in "wasting" them during the daylight. I installed some flexible silicon covered led strips into the little grills in the front bumper and I found a live supply that was on and stayed on when the ign key was in. The strips I found also had the amber indicator function. I had to add a relay and resistor in circuit to dim the leds when the side lights and or head lights are on.
It was a nice little project and all works well. I have an added (unintentional) feature that when the ign key is off and removed, the leds remain on for a minute or two which is useful on a dark night.

As per above, you should be able to do this in VIDA if yours does NOT have the factory fit LED DRLs that replace the fog lights.

XC90 is a bit of an exception as it was still being made long after all the other P2 cars were replaced. Any other P3 Volvo from 2010 you will not be able to disable the DRL in vida, but P2 should be ok.

In response to a PM I received, here are the photos of the boxes that my kit came in, with part numbers.

Please note there are two different part numbers for the switch, depending on whether your car has automatic headlamp levelling (Xenon) (or tungsten and no levelling) or manual levelling (Tungsten only)

Mine has automatic levelling "bendy" xenons, so I ordered kit #31373483 and the switch is 31334997.

The switch for the manual adjusting headlamps appears to be 31334998, and I assume it will have the thumb-wheel fitted for the manual headlamp adjustment.

Good Luck

Cheers

Dave
