It is surprising how quickly you change your view. It doesn't feel like a tank after a while and I for one would not like to go back to a regular car. The XC90 is just so flexible and can fulfil so many roles.

You're right, gmonag. Our previous "big" car was a 2004 Ford Galaxy, so a big step up in refinement and quality! And my wife's car is a Merc SLK, so you can see the "Big V" takes a bit of getting used to, but I'm well happy with it so far!

Finally got round to following up to this post, just to say thanks to all who gave their time, advice & experience. did the first drain/fill atf change about two weeks ago, and the difference is startling! No slip, clunk or hunting any more, it's like a new box. I'm going to repeat the process in a month or so, as the old fluid was black & obviously not changed for a long time - ie, never!

I expect a further minor improvement then, but to all those who are thinking about doing this - go for it - especially if you are noticing the symptoms above. It's quite a simple job, and the information on here will get you through it, notably the video from cheshired5 here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaQ5VsCfMDo&t=296s
His deal on the VIDA/DICE is well worth it too, as it's advised to reset the gearbox counter after each atf change. All in, it's still probably half the cost of going through the dealers!
Thanks again everyone!
