Hi Luke, I am also new to this Forum, I now live in County Waterford Ireland, and like you I became a Volvo owner in a very similar way. My Father (RIP) was quite simply Volvo mad and I was taught to drive in an old 1967 (64-'67) I think. Anyway it was to say the least a beautiful car and for a learner quite the experience. When I passed my test I bought an 1986 340 DL, which served me well, with 9 years of absolute trouble free motoring. Sadly my Dad died in late 2000 and for quite a while I could not even sit in a Volvo.
I guess the experience was just to painful, so I did a stint in a Saab 900 turbo, followed by several Golf GTI's for about 10 years. I can't explain why, but through out those years I was never happy with my vehicles (Although Great cars all) until about a year ago when a friend approached me with several vintage vehicles he was selling off to fund the purchase of a Ferrari (some guys have all the luck!). I went to his storage site where he had then about 35 vintage cars ranging from Saab, Merc's, Jags and two Volvo's, one was a Volvo Amazon in white, which reminded me of the car my Father taught me to drive in, but it was out of my price range. The second was a 1983 240 DL with 70,000 on the clock backed by literally volumes of service records, MOT reports, old tax discs & invoices etc. I bought the 240DL there and then and drove her the 120 miles home with the biggest smile you have ever seen on my face, all the good memories came flooding back and I felt as though I had just met up again with an old friend I had not seen for many years. I am now the proud owner of an '83 Volvo 240DL and unlike the past ten years driving, I actually can not wait to take her out each day. I know this makes me look at the very least daft and at the most looney, But I have to say ( at least for me) there is nothing like a vintage Volvo. My apologies for the length of my reply, It's just your post brought out the sap in me (I guess). Your description of your relationship with your Grandfather and your fondness for the 740 just brought all the good memories in a Volvo back again. I sure know what you mean by cars with character.. I hope you have many many happy years with your 240DL (BTW, Love the colour) despite the brakes and other minor niggles. Also I congratulate you on your skills as a wordsmith. Best Regards Tom |

Well no updates, - I haven't actually done any thing, but in today's hot weather me and my handy helper (my daughter) decided to give it a wash,
And nice & clean! |

That solenoid looks like a hot start valve. Do two of the rubber pipes run to the carb inlet flange?

Yeah, from the solenoid the pipe goes to x2 points on the carb intake
The pipe that supplies(?) It appears to run along the transmission tunnel, And looking at the wiring, it looks like it operates at the same time as another solenoid on the inlet manifold operates (blue arrow) So you think it's the hot start valve? How does it work? |

So nothing much to update other than the exhaust had a minor mishap
Just where it goes into the back box, I've had it welded here before but this time it looks like it's rotted right through and has completely given up the ghost! Now as much as I enjoy faffing with cars for fun, what I do not enjoy is PITA jobs this includes rusty exhaust pipes, so to the garage I went New section of exhaust Over the pit, And fitted Tada, £50 lighter but certainly a lot happier. Whilst I was there I got talking to one of the lads who has a Vauxhall viva, It was nice to have a chat to fellow retro owner, Also whilst I was there I noticed an emissions chart on the wall, Not that I'm overly interested but it was nice to see all the retro cars on a 2012 poster, |

So after its epic pass, I decided to take it out for a run, and what a great car it is to drive, just sit back and relax!
So anyway I managed to get a nice moody photo, despite the miserable weather today! I thought the Mercury vapour lighting would look good with my yellow lamps, although the lighting sort of drowns them, |
