Thank you, I appreciate the comments, yeah it's quite a nice example but far from perfect, the pictures hide a lot of flaws! The rear passenger door has scrape down it which I need to address and the body has a few knocks here and there, but i don't mind the odd small don't, it adds patina and keeps it useable, if it was perfect it would never leave the garage!!!

So I was looking around my 244 today and noticed a few things,
Firstly, excessive smoke, even after a 20odd mile run it still smokes a blue grey, I'd instantly assume head gasket but I'm not getting any mayonnaise in and around the rocker oil filler cap, any thing else I need to look at to determine the fault? Next, This is my inlet manifold closest to the radiator, it looks like something had been running down and leaving that white residue, coolant?! Any thoughts? Just remove, new gasket and refit? Finally I noticed I'm not sure what the solenoid next to it does? I'll try and get some bagging and fit it but what does this but do? It's on the plastic inlet to the carb, Thanks Luke |

On the smoking front, does it get worse with increasing engine load? If so, then there may be something wrong with the piston rings. (Sticky or worn.)
If not, then the valve stem seals are probably the next most likely culprit. If these are worn, they tend to cause a good puff of blue smoke at startup that dies down to a gentle haze after that (or goes away altogether if they're not too bad.) Looks like a new gasket would be a good idea for the manifold as it appears to have a coolant circuit. You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable than myself to identify the solenoid but if I were to hazard a guess, I'd plump for something to do with crankcase ventilation emissions control. Boots.

Thanks boots, I had s Google last night and decided not to take it to work today, I'll get it into the garage tomorrow, to be honest it's quite smokey as in cold start up all the time (but doesn't smell rich - like when the choke is on) I gave it a run to work yesterday to make sure it wasn't just water in the exhaust (50mike round trip) and if anything it was smoking worse when I got back, like I said I'll let the garage sort it, they can replace the starter motor whilst it's there too!

So, update time? Well I haven't really done anything other than use the volvo! After the head gasket scare when it was smoking continually whilst running (but having no other symptoms) an engine flush soon cleared it out and now it's back to running sweet, I had to retard the ignition as I was getting pinking on acceleration - and following up the documents it said I aught to set my timing differently depending on the fuel, originally it was designed for 4 star, with the timing altered it makes the idle a little rough but I was contemplating putting the ignition back and running some lead replacement additive in the petrol,
And I finally managed to sort something that had been annoying me for a while..... I've had yellow lens caps on the lamps for a while now, but I haven't been able get hold of any yellow sidelights, I intended to use LED's but the wiring doesn't seem to be compatible so I'm assuming the polarity is wrong, so as there was no Alternative i was sort of left to my own ingenuity, So I bought some glass paint, And I painted my lamps, And fitted, They aren't as yellow as the caps, but they are better than they were, I might give them another coat of paint, Last edited by Tramp; Mar 27th, 2015 at 10:29. |

Hi
As a very recent first time owner of a 240, I've just read your thread with interest. Your car is looking good and I agree with the others, the wheels have lifted the whole car. I too have had to free off the brakes. I like the fogs on the front. Are they OEM? Is there a separate switch for them?

I assume that when they do, it will be off this switch on my center console (it does nothing at the moment) I could do with following it up really and fixing them, or at least getting some nice neat lamp covers! |

The fog lights seem to be bigger than on mine, but that could have been a standard size for the earlier models. Mine only switch on with the dipped headlights, might yours be the same? The switch style is the same as yours.
Hennabm, I found mine (Hella, as originally fitted) on Ebay, new and boxed, and they weren't too expensive as I remember. They do seem to be a bit of a rarity though so just keep searching! |
