'09 2.0 Engine VEA or PSA?

Been offered a potential end of life 2009 v70 with a 2.0 diesel engine.
The DPF has been bypassed (Weighed in), EGR blanked. It will live its rest of its life running on red diesel, off the road as a potential backup "site toolbox/ambulance".
The 2.0 engine I have been told is tired. If it blows up, it blows up.

At what point did Volvo sever ties with PSA and use their VEA engine? From the info I have it has a slack turbo and the EGR had clogged up. It smokes grey and blue.

I have vague knowledge of the PSA engine to help it stay running, but zero knowledge on the VEA. What's in it will depend if I/We accept it.

In 2010, Volvo replaced the Ford/PSA 2-litre diesel with a 2-litre version of their D5 diesel engine, which was initially called DRIVe and then D3.

Volvo ran with that 2-litre 5-cylinder engine in various versions until 2014, when it was replaced by the 4-cylinder VEA engine.

So, if your V70's engine has four cylinders then it's the Ford/PSA engine and not the VEA.

OK, I'll put it to the powers that be to take it on.
I've a little better experience with that drat'd PSA unit, but for a free vehicle that's nearly done. It's better used than crushed, plus I'll have a few spares when it's well and truly dead. At least PSA parts are a little cheaper to come by. Apart from turbo and injectors...

Should sit quite nicely along side our FL6 fire engine!

That's the good point about those 2.0D engines, the majority of parts are very cheap..... I bought a whole engine once with injectors and pump for £150.

This vehicle will be serviced yearly, despite being on death's door, but I suspect I'll have a parts bin in 6 months, probably zero parts used if it can be helped. it'll be left idling when it's being used, probably with the heater on.
The "cheap parts" card was played, and I'm hoping it'll be considered *when* the engine has issues.

Our bipper lasted 6 months before skipping its cam chain and grenading. Asked for it to be used as "medic 1" so it could stand a chance of survival, so only special operations only.
