Default Im no mechanic.............

Ok guys as some people on here know im not into car mechaincs that good . OK I can change plugs and leads , dizzy cap amongst things .

BUT today I got really fed up on the back brakes rattling like mad so decided to replace the pads and put on a new fitting kit , which is new pins and anti rattle things .
Now I went to a garage yesterday as some may know , and they couldnt indenify the problem .

So I started today jacked the car up with my trolly jack took off the wheel , and while I knew what im actually looking at now ( thanks to Mike Brace and Glen from here ) there didnt seem to be any anti-rattle plates in place . So pulled the clips off both pins and pulled them out . Guess what ...................... there where NO ANTI-RATTLE things on there .Pulled the pads out and they looked in excellent condition , as I know that Ian Hutchinson payed to have them fitted . The pads I bought where identical in size so decided to keep the new ones as spares and keep the old pads in place . The hardest part for me was lining up the pad and anti-rattle plate and the pad for the pins to got through . what a nightmare !

Anyway Im hoping the blumin rattle has now dissapeared , I havnt taken it for a run yet but will be soon as we are out for dinner ( swmbo is treating me ! ).

Well done, I would be amazed if your rattle is not cured.
Best of luck.

When I got my current 240 SE. the owner, the local window cleaner, said he'd had the pads done just a couple of thousand miles before. Not genuine pads but pattern stuff fitted by a reputable 4x4 dealer local to us both.
When I had the dreaded pad rattle I decided enough was enough and on stripping not only found that the rattle shims were missing, but the pads had one retaining pin and clip per side!!!!
I guess someone had lost or swept up the offending parts in the workshop, anyway I had a spare couple of old pins and fitted them and used wire instead of the little clips untill I got a new set of pins clips and shims from brakes international.
One lesson to be learned 'trust no one' until you've seen it with your own eyes or find someone who you know does it right!!!!!
Unfortunately there are many who don't, no wonder that garages get bad press

Well I certainly wont be using that Volvo independent again - and having the pads wasnt cheap if memory serves.

Glad you got it sorted Mike
