Default Volvo 850 GLT 1993 Engine Trouble

Hello,

Just found this site and this is my first post!

Hopefully someone can help me with my engine problems on my 850 GLT 1993 Non-Turbo 20Valve. Also its a british model.

I recently managed to get it through its yearly MOT with a caliper change on the rear axle but have since had trouble with the engine stalling and being unreliable only whilst warm. Putting it down to an electric problem (as rotor arm had a crack in it!) I have recently changed the rotor arm and distribiuter cap but the problem still persists. Also the ABS light seems to be staying illuminated at times also.

I believe my volvo utilises the Jetronic system (?) and the onboard diagnostic unit is reading error codes 2-1-2 and 1-2-1 out of port A2 and 1-4-4 out of port A3. Which i think signifies a MAF problem and ABS sensor problems (?).

Has anyone any advice to rectifying these problems on what is usually a cracking engine and which i heavily rely upon for a business.

Many thanks. James

Code definitions:

A2 engine

1-2-1 MAF Sensor Signal Absent Or Faulty
2-1-2 HO2S (Lambda) Sensor Signal Absent Or Faulty

It would be useful to read A6 (Ignition)

Brakes

1-4-4 Brake disks over heated.

As a first step I'd reset the codes and see if any come back.

You could try disconnecting the MAF sensor and see if the car runs better.

It looks like you may need a new MAF and possibly a Lambda sensor.

Hello Chris,

Many thanks for your reply. I reset all the codes today and the codes re-appeared

A6 module is all clear and the car was sat still overnight so not sure why the brake disc code got thrown out? The abs light is now staying on also.

I have had the car sitting in idle ticking over and unplugged the MAF (which im assuming is attached to the hosing near the air filter) and it instantly dies.

Im not a bad home mechanic and are these jobs relatively feesable?

Any input is very welcome.

Regards, James.

Replacement of the MAF & Lambda sensor are simiple jobs, just expensive.

1-4-4 code is set when the ECU thinks that the tracs has been used too much, seems strange the code is reappearing without the car being driven, maybe the reset didn't work, it can take a bit of practice to get ti right.

yeah its all seems quite strange to be honest!

i reset all the codes until the unit read 1-1-1 in all ports, but presumeably the fault re-registers after the engine restarts.

do you know of any links that shows you the location of the sensors and how to change them over?

i may well try just cleaning the MAF first. im not sure why the engine cuts out when it disconnects, surely it should go to limp mode.

thanks again Chris for your advice.

I might well get a new MAF and as the front oxygen sensor is showing at over £220 I might try and source one from ebay or scrap yard. I wish these problems were more black and white but hey thats cars for ya!

regards.

Hi

One way to test the MAF. While the engine is running, unplug the Maf and the engine note should change, it should run quite rough. If there is no change then usually the Maf is at fault and running in 'default' mode.

As you also have a O2 issue I would not be convinced that both Maf and O sensor have failed. Have you looked for air leaks, exhaust leaks etc?

Matt
I think my grammer is deteriorating...

ah havent thought of that yet. its showing error codes for the MAF & O2 sensor & its literally just passed its MOT last week which im sure checks the exhaust emissions therefore the lambda.

when i unplug the MAF the engine instantly dies. I have just changed the oil but surely that wouldnt be an issue as the correct grade was used.

where/how would i start looking for air leaks. many thanks for the input!

james.

Hello again all,

Went out in the volvo this morning and all fine. ABS light even went off and seems to be staying off now.

However, I just started it up to go somewhere important this afternoon and suprise suprise she doesnt want to start. It was about a quarter the way up the temp guage. Looked at the codes and 1-1-1 reading from all ports! I unplugged the MAF and she started but struggled along which i guess is usual?

Now this must point towards a faulty MAF? any input greatly needed!

regards, James
