Default v70 2005 flickery lights and dash

so for a month-ish now the headlights and dash randomly dim in as if it was having a spasm and its not consistent but is worrying.

depending on who you ask its either the alternator on its way out, battery failing or both!

based on your collective experiences what is likely to be the cause as im about to buy a multimeter today to see if i can self diagnose and save a bit of cash.

thanks

d

My car had the same symptoms and were caused by a faulty aftermarket alternator that had been fitted to the car a few months before I bought it. If your car still has the original Volvo alternator you can exchange it for a rebuilt one for around £110-£130. Multimeter won’t show any anomalies

Does the speedo and tack have chrome rings? Chrome rings means you have the new design.
The older design has "built in" weaknesses. These weaknesses include dropping out and flickering etc. due to bad soldering joints.
I do think you're on the right track because a bad regulator is so often associated with flickering.

Another thing you may already know is having your Volvo rebuilt by a reputable shop is better than a half-baked rebuild from some other supplier.

battery replaced
no more flicker
but
no high beams anymore

when the weather is a bit less deluge-y i will check the fuses but suspect the stalk has given up the ghost.

unless you guys have other ideas/suggestions?

pull the stalk back not even a light on the dash and i cant flash anyone

in the summer not an issue dont really need lights till late but now theyre quite important

ive got dipped beams so can use it but no beams
