volvo 480-starting and running problems.
Hi there,
I am starting to get really frustrated with my 480 now I love it but at the same time I hate it. Basically It really struggles to start, I have changed the fuel filter today which was a bit tricky as fittings very rusty, but thats done now, changed spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil and coolant 6 months or so ago.it stalls and then theres like a hissing and spluttering noise and then it dies. Anyone got any suggestions on what changing/checking next. Could it be the ignition timing or a air leak? It runs rough aswell and is sounding abit tappety, think the shims will need doing soon, but I dont think this would affect the running that much would it? If someone is in the gloucestershire area or passing through after 5pm mon to fri or anytime at the weekend I would be extremely grateful if you could pop down and give me some advice. Also checked wires that go from headlining to tailgate as wiper motor wasn't working and 4 wires were snapped and 2 were bare wire, so probably shorting out, how do I identify which wires which, and I took the rubber insulation of the wires but theres still a bit at the top, just where it goes in the tailgate, is it a block connector or are they just soldered on to pins, as havent got the last bit of cover of yet? Thanks very much, Matt. |

Hi.
One thing that may be worth checking is the connector wiring on the air mass meter. I had similar probs recently & a garage chappy took about 5 minutes to find the snag. Had been driving me crazy for weeks! The connector had corroded. A nice shiny new one solved it. Hopefully it won't be the sensor itself as they are expensive........ Is the car a turbo? If yes, there is a computor module pop riveted onto the bracket that holds the coil in place. I have been advised (on this forum) that this module can course similar syptoms & to change it if the problem starts again on mine. If you do change it make sure you get one from a turbo model. If yours is not a turbo ignore this paragraph! Good Luck

volvo turbo vacuum problem
hi i have done a conversion in my 16v valver and put the volvo 480 engine in all running. it will start up and you can rev it really slow and it will rev right through. as soon as you put ur foot down fast or hard it will seem as if it wants to die and its going burrrrrrrgggh.i have checked all boost pipes as i have front mount. also when i unplug sensors such as idle control and air flow its the same problem. when i remove the idle control itself it will rev hard all the way through without reving it any ideas

If I understand correctly, you're saying it revs fine when the Idle Control Valve is dis-connected?
Maybe the valve needs a good clean? http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum...ic.php?t=15569 Good Luck Clean up the connectors on the valve too.
