Default XC90 SIM stopped working

I've got a 2017 XC90 and have been buying "Three" 24GB PAYG data SIMs to put in the slot under the boot since new to get RTTI etc.

In November my RTTI stopped working, so I assumed my data had run out and bought a new card as I do periodically. However, that didn't work either, and neither did the SIM card out of my phone when I tried it.

Booked the car in to get it repaired today, and they have put a Vodafone/Volvo 100GB SIM in there and said it works fine. I asked why my "Three" SIM no longer works, and they'd heard something about "Volvo no longer supporting it".

Does anyone know any more? I'm glad they've got it working, but I'm rather confused and might well have to argue about the bill later. If Volvo have stopped supporting Three SIMs without notice, I don't think it's my fault.

Sounds unlikely. There are several people on here who use '3' SIM cards and I don't recall anyone else having issues.

I'm not sure if a SIM card from a mobile phone would work in any case.

I am using a 3 data Sim and it is still working fine.

Try activating the new Sim in your phone and check your car is still set to car modem in settings.

When I used my car this morning, my 3 data SIM was also working fine. I find the 3 SIMs to be so much less hassle than the Vodafone one, they connect almost immediately and you can just slot a new one in and it’s ready to go, none of the trauma of getting the Vodafone one set up.

I might be wrong on this but I'm pretty sure at some point during 2016/17 that Volvo 'upgraded the car modem to include 4G.

Prior to this, it was 2G/3G only.

What has happened recently is that most networks have announced they are slowly shutting down their 3G service. Three supposedly aren't really starting this until April this year, but depending on where you live, it may have already happened, in which case you would be out of luck if you didn't have a 4G Modem.

Worth checking their availability checker for your area just in case they've moved early.

Spoke too soon, mine did not work tonight. (Just checked my data and it has ran out) so hope it is a coincidence and modem is ok.

If it does turn out to be a 3g/4g issue or a fault with the SIM slot, you can get a mobile USB hotspot dongle fairly cheaply, plugged in to a USB socket it will come on with the car and using your SIM provide a WIFI hotspot that the car can automatically connect to.

Not the one I have used in the past but an example here

My car has a 3G-only modem and I use the dealer provided 100GB SIM. Last year I emailed Volvo to ask what would happen when 3G was switched off. They replied that the car would continue to have mobile access. I was sceptical as I couldn't see how that would be possible.

Anyway, 3G has been switched off where I live and I still have access via the SIM. I can only assume that as it's a multi-network SIM (with roaming) it has connected to another, non-Vodafone, 3G network.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've got the car back from the dealer, now with a Vodafone SIM in the boot, but it's still not connecting to the internet (no globe symbol on the top of the screen, no RTTI etc.)

Are there any diagnostics I can do at home, because clearly the dealer has no more idea than me.
