Just out of interest, why would you not advise having a dealer do it?

Mines been in multiple times over the years and theyve always done an acceptable job at a reasonable price.

I'd have to look in my book for the exact price but last time was in the region of £130 all in, and it got valeted for free. Can't see a reputable specialist being significantly cheaper.

You definitely don't want a mere independent messing about with Haldex - it needs a specialist or a dealer, somone that knows that they're about. There are more ways to **** up Haldex than you can imagine.

I would not recommend a dealer for simple jobs like this based on cost. I am assuming you are referring to haldex oil and filter change rather than the pump which is what this thread is actually about.

It doers not require any "specialist" knowledge to change the filter and oil. It is quite a straight-forward DIY job and certainly one that any independent garage could handle very easily.

Replacing the pump and/or getting the DEM rebuilt are also simple jobs. If you have the gen 4 haldex and do not have the larger flange it is really easy and quick.

To be honest I do not really understand why you think this is all so complicated!

Just an update incase anyone else wants to do this on a 2012 R-design with the large propshaft flange.

As previously mentioned the flange needs to be removed to enable the Haldex pump to be removed.
Once the 6propshaft bolts are removed the prop shaft needs loosening from the flange, my 2012 did NOT have the additional threaded holes in the flange to drive the propshaft out, the additional holes had no threads. I simply put a long punch in from the rear through the additional holes and tapped the propshaft loose.

To drop the propshaft out of the flange is very difficult even once loosened from the flange(the flange is deep). The only way to get the propshaft out the flange was to drop the exhaust to the floor, even then it was very hard to get the propshaft in and out of the flange.
Once the propshaft is out, removing the flange is pretty straight forward, air gun the nut off as it is very tight then just tap the flange off.
Changing the pump, filter and oil is then simple.

Reassembling is straight forward apart from trying to get the propshaft back in the flange as it is very tight for clearance(this would be easier with two people)
Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of doing this on car with the large flange.

Hi JamesS44,

Thanks for the update.
Can I just ask though, did you do this with the car on the ground or up on a lift?

Thanks,
teddyk.

Hi teddyK,

I did it on axlestands, also to note I didn't fully remove the exhaust I left it connected to the flex joint at the front and care fully lowered the rest and laid it on the ground still connected.
Fully removing the exhaust would allow the propshaft more clearance to clear the flange.

Having done this job myself, the only thing that I would add is that when you have the flange off, it's a good idea to remove the flange pinion seal and fit a new one.

Genuine seal from Volvo was pretty cheap and it only adds an extra 10 minutes to the job.

If you go to all that trouble and after full reassembly and road test find that the old seal is now leaking after being disturbed it would be .............................

Chances are everything will be fine though.👍
