340 gears
Hi can anyone help?
I have recently acquired an F plate 340 1700cc redline which has a gearchange problem. To engage 1st and 2nd gears you have to go really hard to the left to find the gears. It is not a clutch problem as they are still odd even when the engine is not running. There is a fair bit of play on the stick could it be the bushes atthe bottom of the gearstick? I am hoping for some clues before I take the sideplate off the gearbox to check it.Anyone any thoughts or any help appreciate many thanks WILLIE |

RE: 340 gears
Willie,
Do the gears engage normally if you lift the reverse collar? This is quite a common problem on the larger Volvos and on these the reverse lock plate is adjustable, it`s probably a similar set up on your 340. Personally I would replace the bushes etc in the linkage to eliminate the play on the stick and then adjust the lock plate to allow the lever more travel towards the 1st-2nd plane only if required. Certainly check/replace the bushes before attacking the gearbox! Colin. |

RE: 340 gears
That sounds like a car I saw at auction in Glasgow a few months back, everything sound apart from a really wobbly gear change and a non working rev counter at first glance.
As Colin said, probably just new bushings in the gear change and possibly in the linkage to the gearbox as well. at least you only need to take the propshaft out to get the thing out (See my next post about a 360, torque tube etc etc) There is a detent bracket that moves when you lift the reverse lever and for now, you could move it to the left a bit to make driving a bit easier, you get at it from inside the car. Remove all the leather, there is a screw at the front that releases it all, and then there is a bracket, because there is so much wobble it's pointless giving you the spec to adjust it to, but just set it so that you can get into first without selecting reverse by mistake, and then get those bushings renewed ASAP.
