You're right that nobody buys a 265 as a solid investment, but something has made it "worth" 300% more than it was three years ago, and I suspect it's the general state of the classic car market. The 262 on eBay now is heading for £4k with two days to go.
Bonhams sold an 1800ES last month for $94k (£54k). Value, bandwagon, new paradigm, tulips? |

Might as well have something old and fun in the drive instead of watching your money evaporate. And why not? Military stuff is the same, but less susceptible to market spikes and troughs. There the fun is in "having" rather than driving. At least you can go shopping in a 265! |

Interesting update on this one.....
I've just been speaking to the seller, (ok trying to do a naughty "off-ebay" deal!). I mentioned to him about this thread, and he has clarified what was in my mind, having seen the log book, which shows two previous owners. The current seller bought it in 2012 from the dealer who bought it from e-bay in 2011. He confirmed that he knew the dealer had paid £870 for it, and spent £1500 getting it through an MOT!. (There are bills for this which, thinking about it again - I have seen) The current seller paid £2300 for it in 2012, and has spent a further £1000 or so on work since! Again receipts for all this exist. Interesting to fill in those gaps in the story!

It would be interesting to see what is on those bills and receipts. Not had any welding done and hasn't been in the paint shop by the look of it. The air filter could do with at least a rattle can.
What has been done for £2500? |

Having seen and driven it, met the seller and looked through the file it does all add up.

It's great that you've been able to fill in the history for the last few years. Sounds like someone has taken a good car and made it a great car. Good luck if you buy it.
Kind regards Lucien. |

We've done a deal.
Burt is now mine! Sadly I just don't have the time to pick it up and drive it to the National on Sunday..............damn! But don't worry, it will be around and you can judge for yourselves soon enough. In the meantime, whatever I paid for it, (and I am more than happy with the deal done), I am over the moon to be able to own, and care for, this wonderful rare car. Please 200 folks, be happy that it will remain in the VOC and, I promise, be well looked after. Expect a post or two from me regarding its future care!! Nice to now be part of the 200 forum. Best regards all,

Graeme, it looked a good one from the link. You've done your Victor Meldrew aka due dilligence: i.e. you have asked questions, looked at the documents as evidence, researched, checked the car itself ... and it sounds encouraging that the seller welcomed your questions
I suspect and hope that you are going to be really really pleased that you have bought that car. Nice one! . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Jun 28th, 2014 at 09:56. |
