Indeed yes, the 164 is a magnificent car - the top of Volvo's range in the late 60s and early 70s.

It's the same basic car as the 144 - which later became the 240, but with a longer nose to accommodate the straight-6 B30 engine.

The early cars had carburetted engines, the later E models had the then brand new Bosch D-Jet electronic fuel injection system. This system was also used by M-B, Jaguar, Renault, VW and Porsche.

164s could be had with either manual and automatic transmission, with leather upholstery, metallic paint and the option of all sorts of safety kit that now we'd think of as standard even in the most humble of modern cars, including air con, power steering, dual circuit brakes, seat belts all round etc etc.

There aren't that many about now, and very few in absolutely top order, although they do sometimes crop up on Ebay or 'Carandclassic'.

Although very well-built, they can suffer from tin-worm, which makes them expensive to fix.

One recently went on Ebay for £1500, whereas there's a stunning gold one for sale currently at £7000 or so.

They don't quite have the appeal of big Mercs or Jags etc as 'classics', although in truth they are every bit as well engineered as the best German cars, and a lot better than most UK offerings of the time.

The other thing is that converted to LPG a 164 would truly make a viable alternative to a much more modern car.

Some body panels are shared with the 140 and even 240 series, and the mechanical bits are generally over-engineered and long-lived. Parts for the fuel injection system are I believe the only major difficulty.

I hope you enjoy your new 164 - there's a lot on here who would love to own one, me included.

Welcome to Volvo-land!

Jack

Interesting to hear of others with TEs. Our good old DVLA list 6 as known to them but there are others this side of the water - they don't for instance know of one I have in storage with a manual + O/d gearbox and twin carbs !

Must invent the 36 hour day to get such cars going again.....

Hi

Do not know how many are made - Volvo in Sweden can not help with the number of TE, do you have info. ?

On the Swedish 164 Club home page is a list of "all" 164 - see more here;

http://www.164list.se/

I am the very happy owner ef a super nice TE standing as factory new. No rust and org. paint without error - one owner until December 2012. Has been in a Volvo showroom for 28 years.

Good evening -

To add to jack's post - maybe obvious but TE stands for Top Executive.

As far as I know it was designed with the chauffeur driven passenger also in mind, so for example rear headrests were added, along with rear map reading lights on a flexi-stem, and Volvo's top of the range 8 track stereo. I think (possibly) also the engines were uprated for higher mileages, eg full steel timing gears. Air conditioning was standard, as was auto gearbox and fuel injection. Car was produced only in 1974/5.

It'd be great to see photos!

Kind regards
Lucien

Capt' Jack, If you look closely at the gold one you will see rust bubbles appearing along the door tops. I suspect that it's been repainted at some time. The price is way to high.

Kinda surprised 'TE' stands for Top Executive- thought the E stood for einzpruken (not good spelling) meaning fuel inj and the T stood for touring?
GLT stands for 'grand luxe touring' doesn't it??

As for the gold 164e Im actually coming round to the idea that whilst it is a fair bundle of cash it ain't so bad- zero work to do to it, nice history and take a look how much you have to pay for a manky Ford Escort mk 1 these days!?
If I had some serious money id have a pair of em!
