Steering creak simply sorted
Ah, the benefits of simple solutions....
I've recently had an intermittent creaking when steering at low speeds in my 850 R. After canvassing various people's opinions with equally varying views, passing a MOT and getting the tracking checked as OK, I was still no further forward with a cause. CV joints were eliminated, track rod ends and lower wishbone bushes ditto - so what was left? I took it to Arthur Jones in Loughborough, my warranty company's designated garage; they initially diagnosed it as a failing top bearing in a suspension strut - this seemed to match the problem pretty accurately and they began to look for parts to fix it. However, their chief mechanic, when asked his opinion said that it was "steering stops" - and indeed it was! What these are are bump stops on the end of the steering arms and on the suspension, which stop the units hitting each other incorrectly. You'll see a white area on the lower suspension, which matches a lump on the steering arm. Clean and grease these rubbing surfaces and blessed quiet returns on full lock - bliss! |

I just put it down to the car's immense weight as when mine does it it sounds a bit like a ship pulling away!
