Hi Ross, I don't believe they are. My understanding is the new range of Volvo RN engines (which encompass both the T4 ones) were designed by Volvo themselves and manufactured at their plant in Torslanda. Basically its either a 2.3 T5 or 2.5T (lpt) block minus one cylinder. The 2.0 T4 does have a slightly larger bore (83mm vs 81mm) but the 1.9 T4 tends to be the favoured choice; I've heard of some Swedes getting over 600bhp from them.

ahh right, was just a query from someone on the Rover forum out of interest who thought the 1.9T4 was a renault engine and wondered if they both were.
so basically, they are the same engine, 2.0 has a slightly larger bore but the 1.9T is closed deck IIRC and this favoured? Ross

Yes, they are both related to the T5 and 2.5T engines respectively. The 1.9 T4 is favoured largely because it has thicker cylinder walls and I have read reports that there was some special work done to the head of the 1.9 T2 engine (which is the base for virtually all high horsepower applications in Scandinavia). In addition, the Phase I T4s did not have VVT, which made it easier for some tuning companies to work with them.

Hi, I have a 97MY V40 T4.
Can you confirm which Model Years the Phase 1 - T4 engine went from? I assume my car has the phase 1 engine? Thanks Prad |

Yes, the Phase 1 cars ran from MY97-99, so yours should be a Phase 1. Which part of the UK do you live in? There may be someone near you with an MTE tuned T4.
