I'll start a record of the renovation on the RB thread tomorrow. My local F1 Centre has agreed to take the old tyres off and dispose of them (our council won't take them any more) for the price of a drink. I'm wondering, what sort of paint did you use? I was thinking of aerosol smooth Hamerite, but it is quite thick so maybe the centres would not fit well? Perhaps something like this would be better:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUTOTEK-P...53.m1438.l2649

What do you think?
On those wheels above Alan, i think i used this :

https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/rust-ole...00ml/p/0487989

The can design has changed hence only "think" i used that! It was certainly glitter paint made by Rustoleum anyway.

As for the Autotek paint, it's good stuff. I used it on my 760 wheel (only done one so far!) and the silver you've linked to comes out like this :

Through fiendishly devilish means, i then painted it with another Autotek product but the "Steel Silver" instead and got this :

......... and on the car, wheel painted in the "Steel silver" :

From certain angles the "VOLVO" in the middle isn't visible yet from others it is. I call it my "ghost logo".

On all the paintwork i used a few coats of clear lacquer to protect and enhance it all.

The Autotek stuff is better than the smooth Hammerite in this application because as you rightly point out, the Hammerite stuff tends to be pretty thick.

... £300 for a set of pretty scabby Virgo wheels - surely that is a ridiculous price? Have I missed something or has the seller put the decimal point in the wrong place?

Alan
But they're Virgos, and everybody wants them don't they?!! Madness.

In that instance .... well it is ridiculous.

In general. It depends which type of Volvo wheel and how much work is needed.

Overall. I think Volvo wheels for 240s have a good value but low price. there is a difference.

I have sold some for the cost of delivery. To keep them in the 240 "community" because that is part of, value, in my opinion.

Thank you for that Dave,

I'd be very happy with the sort of finish you achieved with your 760's wheels, so I think I'll order a couple of cans of the Autotek paint. It is pretty inexpensive, so it doesn't matter if I experiment a bit. Although Hamerite is an excellent product in its place, I agree it will be a bit too thick for wheels, so those centre caps probably would not fit properly.

The silver Autotek paint looks a nice colour, I'm not at all interested in matching the original Volvo colour.

Wheel collection is delayed until tomorrow.

Alan

Is that right? I have Virgo 15" wheels on the RB, they do look nice but I certainly would not pay £300 for a set.

If anyone would pay that much then I agree: it would be madness.

Many thanks Bob,
I have a compressor and spray gun, but for the amount I need I think it might be as well to use rattle cans. I've ordered some Autotec paint and primer and we'll see how they turn out (I'll write a report on the RB page).

I don't think Virgo wheels are that desirable Alan, they're nice but i think the Draco wheels have replaced them although i believe other wheels are more sought after, the Galaxy wheel comes to mind although i don't see the attraction myself.

You'll need to make sure the Autotek paint is at least at room temperature Alan, it doesn't like being cold. If you can get your painting area nice and warm (and still well ventilated) you should be ok though or wait until the warmer weather returns.

As I said Dave: the Virgo wheels look nice on the RB, but I would not have paid £300 for them if they had not come with the motor car:

Thank you for the painting tips - I know about the chemistry of paint. I may sort out a small paint bay for one wheel at a time inside the house (maybe the utility room - or the downstairs loo) - being unmarried has some advantages :-)

I wasn't questioning your knowledge of paint Alan, just pointing out that the Autotek paint seems to be a bit more fussy than most on temperature.

As for not being married having advantages, the dishwasher is great for the final clean of the wheel before painting!

... yes indeed Dave; it would not be the first time the washing-up machine has doubled as a parts washer, or the oven used to expand motorcycle crankcases whilst the bearings sit in the freezer... also I keep a spray bottle full of Screwfix degreaser by the utility room sink, it gets used for bike and car parts quite a lot :-)
