There is a link to the towing weights for the 240 on the main site - the 240 should pull 1500 without too much hassle - but you are up at the top end of the tow limit.

I towed 1500kg with a 740 and that became very slow when I hit a hill

There are two factors - legality, and hills. (and I suppose, safety!)
On a levelish road weight doesn't really come into it. I have once in a while pulled a grossly overloaded trailer a short distance - probably 2 tonnes or more- with a 240, and had the car itself piled up too, roof rack included.
But if you want to get up hills then the proper weight limits are sensible.

I've got an S40 2.0t and that says it can tow 1400kg braked trailer, not tried it as yet as don't have the licence to tow that much yet, but have towed an unladen 19ft car transporter trailer and kept looking in my mirror to see if it was still there it towed it that easy.

Am sure an classic v70 diesel would be more than capable of towing your caravan
