BW55 Question - Broken Bolt?

Hi there -

I have a 1984 240DL (originally from the UK) with a B21A engine and a BW55 transmission that I'm attempting to replace with an m47. I've gotten all the bell housing and other bolts off, but the BW55 transmission is not budging. I'm troubleshooting the problem, and I'm wondering if I have a snapped bolt stud in one of the threaded holes of the bell housing.

Could you take a look at the following pictures and let me know if there was supposed to be a bolt in the circled hole and what it was for? The hole is blocked with something, and I'm wondering if it is a broken bolt stud. I can't get close enough to get a good look.

The pictures are taken from the front of the car looking rear, with the starter removed.

It is a locating dowel, there will be one the other side of the block too. The gearboxes can get stuck on them so you may need to use some pry bars to open the gap up and spray some penetrating fluid on them. If they pull out of the block then you can remove them from the gearbox and hammer them back in to the block.

I'm not 100% sure on the BW gearbox but on the AW gearboxes you have to remove four bolts from inside the bellhousing that holds the torque converter and the flex plate together, if you don't undo them you'll never get the gearbox off.

I would check the condition of the clutch fork and the pivot ball on the M47 as they wear down where they rub against each other.

Thank you for the information. It's been 38 years, so I expect it will be a battle to remove these dowels, especially given their location.

I have removed the flywheel bolts, and I will replace the worn items on the M47. Also installing a hydraulic clutch cable. At least that's the plan.

Is not the diff ratio different for auto an manual boxes? I had a Merc W123 estate that had had a 6 cyl diesel fitted, from a W124 (lovely engine, ran great on sunflower oil), with manual box; original was auto. It wouldn't rev out in top. So you may be at max revs at under max design speed? Good for 0-60 times, tho! Am i correct, you knowledgeables? An, yes, i've had sticky dowel prob; just keep waggling gently, an use Pocket Rocket release fluid, way better than WD an the like.
