Default 2004 XC70 Bi-Xenon headlight issue

My wife was out-of-state with the 2004 XC70 when the dashboard message center reported a bulb problem. Bulb out. Visited dealer who had said it would be 5 minutes to switch a bulb. An hour later they told her about a "transformer" that needed replacing and it cost $700 and would take 3 hours. Total expense of near $1,000.

She called very upset, and I told her to bring it home. We bought the car second hand, it was pristine, and has been great. We know nothing about bi-Xenon. By "transformer" do they mean "ballast"? And why would one headlamp be fine, if they "ballast" needs replacing?

Thoughts? Suggestions? I am taking to our local dealer when she gets home with the car. Why is this an expensive nightmare?

Thanks,
SC

Each bulb has its own ballast to fire up the bulb.

Can’t comment on the prices.

It may be cheaper to fit a complete conversion kit

Happy New Year
