Default 1991 440 1.7 misfire?

Hi everyone.

This is my first post, sorry about asking for help right away.

I have a 1991 1.7 440 LE and its been misfiring (hesitating) when I accelerate. Sometimes the engine is fine, but in cold weather it seems to misfire more.

I've had the car for about 4 years, and it's always had this problem.

Also just for info it's a carburetor petrol engine.

Does anyone know what causes this?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Mark

most likely the distributor cap and rotor arm! it was a common problem when the cars were current with genuine parts ! with the neglected 400's around now its almost certain .. They used to last about 2 years ..
Make sure you get genuine volvo parts as i have found cheap ones misfire even when new !

Thanks for the replies.

I am going to change the HT leads. The Spark Plugs are in pretty good condition, then I will change the Distributor Cap and Arm and see what happens. There's a shop called GSF (German, Swedish, French) only a couple of miles from me, I'll nip down and get the parts.

i would look at the cap and rotor see what state they are in . The only place you get the best parts is the dealer , they have extra laquer on the inside of the cap which non genuine dont have .. you really do need the best on the 440 due to the high power coil . Even then they can burn the rotor arm and start tracking inside the cap after a couple of years ... GSF wont sell genuine volvo parts

Best is to install NGK BPR7ES sparkplugs. My experience with other brands is that they can cause misfires. Stay away from the fancy sparkplugs like irridium, platina, 4 electrodes etc. I totally agree with Clan, these Renault engines are very picky when it comes to ignition parts.

welcome , it comes from 20 years of experience working on the 400 series . Also genuine plugs are the only ones guaranteed to work . start with everything as it was when it left the factory and you have a good chance of curing it .. ANY non genuine part is going to be a weak link if you were to change all the above parts for non volvo ..

The genuine Volvo plugs are made bij NGK nowadays. Beru used to be the producer for Volvo iirc. Another reliable part scource for these engines is Renault, often cheaper as Volvo. After all the 400series petrol engines originate from R. (Clio, R5, R21 and some more)
