1991 440 1.7 misfire?
Hi everyone.
This is my first post, sorry about asking for help right away. I have a 1991 1.7 440 LE and its been misfiring (hesitating) when I accelerate. Sometimes the engine is fine, but in cold weather it seems to misfire more. I've had the car for about 4 years, and it's always had this problem. Also just for info it's a carburetor petrol engine. Does anyone know what causes this? Any help greatly appreciated. Mark Last edited by mark440; Dec 11th, 2009 at 23:27. |

most likely the distributor cap and rotor arm! it was a common problem when the cars were current with genuine parts ! with the neglected 400's around now its almost certain .. They used to last about 2 years ..
Make sure you get genuine volvo parts as i have found cheap ones misfire even when new !

Thanks for the replies.
I am going to change the HT leads. The Spark Plugs are in pretty good condition, then I will change the Distributor Cap and Arm and see what happens. There's a shop called GSF (German, Swedish, French) only a couple of miles from me, I'll nip down and get the parts. mark |

Best is to install NGK BPR7ES sparkplugs. My experience with other brands is that they can cause misfires. Stay away from the fancy sparkplugs like irridium, platina, 4 electrodes etc. I totally agree with Clan, these Renault engines are very picky when it comes to ignition parts.

welcome , it comes from 20 years of experience working on the 400 series . Also genuine plugs are the only ones guaranteed to work . start with everything as it was when it left the factory and you have a good chance of curing it .. ANY non genuine part is going to be a weak link if you were to change all the above parts for non volvo ..
