Gearbox Conversion
I own several 164's and one 144. One of my 164's needs a rear oil seal replacement and since it's an auto requiring transmission attention, I've decided to replace it with a manual M400 gearbox, since I have all required parts. However, the M410 would facilitate better milage (O/D) but they are now very hard to find.
I've found Volvo 240 owners converting W58 5-speed gearboxes from toyotas and had heard about a Getrag V160 6-speed being used in a 164 but I don't know the info to verify this case. The sixth gear of the V160 is close to the M410 O/D ratio and the idea of 6-speed is appealing, so if you, or any one else you know has used a viable 5/6 speed gear box compatible with a 164E ? Please reply this thread. If not, the M400 will simply have to do ! Cheers |

Hi,
I have the M410 crossmember you need. It is a custom-made item, not OE, adapted from an M400 item, but it's strong and it fits. Let me know if you want photos so you can have a copy made, or if you want to buy mine and have it shipped. Getting the propshaft shortened and rebalanced should be easy if you find a specialist. Are you keeping the rear axle from the auto? If so remember to factor that into ratio calculations. In my experience, manual 164s had a shorter rear axle. Regards John |
