Arrow Spares or repair 2007 XC90 SE D5 Geartronic.

About 2 weeks ago I had to be recovered from near Yeovil back to Leigh when I broke down.

I had the message TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED on the display and was losing drive.

I saw ATF running from the drain hole at the bottom of the bell housing and a mechanic who attended from my breakdown service said a seal had failed in the gearbox.

That would be the torque converter seal as it's the only seal in there IIRC.

About 10 years ago I did a repair on my V70 auto box documented on this forum but at my age now I cannot do that - hence the spares or repair.

I have only had this car since last November and it now has just less than 146K on it.

The car has the big 19 inch alloys fitted which are in good condition.

Black leather interior.

It has 7 seats, removable towbar, satnav and original working audio system.

The engine has never given me any problems.

The bodywork is tidy and metallic silver.

There are two keyfobs and the A/C is cold and works well.

There is an electric sunroof and the sunroof drain pipes have been checked in my ownership.

In that time the following has been done:

2 ATF sump dumps & refill done using JWS3309 fluid.

Over head cambelt, water pump, tensioners and aux belt done at Bryn Motors Volvo indi near Wigan ( about 2 months ago).

Front engine mount replaced with genuine one from Rybrook Volvo - May this year.

Lower engine/gearbox mount replaced - March 22.

Genuine Volvo front brake pads fitted and parking brake shoe expander/adjuster fitted - June this year.

Brakes bled and stainless bleed nipples fitted.

Front parking sensors fitted - January.

New pollen filter - June this year.

Oil & oil filter done and also changed air filter - December 21.

MOT expires November 12th.

The car will need to be trailered away.

I would hope for about £1,200 as it stands.

A good home mechanic with facilities should be able to replace the torque converter seal which I wouldn't expect to cost even £35.

Viewing anytime - we are retired.

Comments welcome.

Colin

Really sorry to hear your brief XC90 ownership has possibly ended this way. I wouldn't give up - it may be worth paying someone to lift the engine (easiest way of accessing the TC).

If I hadn't just bought another Massey I'd be sniffing round it.... :-(

Thanks - I had thought of that and asked around a bit and found someone who has seen it and would do it but only for himself and not to return it to me.

He's also going off to Europe for a month this weekend so wouldn't want it till end of August anyway.

Sorry to hear that, what a shame! £1,200 seems so reasonable! The wheels are no doubt worth reasonable money alone.

I echo what T has already said above, is it not worth getting someone out to do it?

Looks really lovey other than the fault!

I have not totally exhausted my options yet I suspect but I thought it unlikely that a mechanic would remove the gearbox and only fit a new seal.

A re conditioned gearbox seems to be their idea and that is why I suspect a good home mechanic with the facilities would be good.

After all people split the engine and box on the Euro 3 versions of the D5 to renew the core plugs that have a habit of leaking sometimes.

I have now taken a sizable deposit on the XC90 to sell at the asking price.

Collection Saturday.

I'll be sad to see it go.

Well done, that’s good. I totally agree with what you say, a seal on a good box is better than replacing with a worn box that may not have had a great deal of refurbishment done on it.
