VVT rattle when warm
Hi!
My GF has a Volvo V40 from 2002. When she bought the car, the VVT was bad. We are replaced with a brand new, with a brand new solenoid and timing belt & water pump. Now it's running with Castrol Magnatec 10W40. Sadly the rattling noise is still heard. Only start rattling when the engine is warmed up. About 10 minutes on idle. I can also hear the hydraulic valve lifter. I guess, this effect is caused by the oil pressure problem. However, the oil pressure lamp is not lit. In my opinion, the problem is with the holes which are move the oil to the head. On the crankshaft, I think the oil pressure is normal. This is the second oil change period. The PCV valve is also bad, it causes a vacuum in the head. (Checked with rubber gloves which were clamped on the oil filler cap.) Bad PCV can cause this problem? Not sure about the vvt. The recommended oil for the vvt engines was 5/40 in the UK, so might be worth trying that instead of 10/40.
The PCV is in good condition if the glove is sucked in to the filler. When the glove is inflated is when you have a problem.

Sorry, my bad. We using 5W40, it was just a typo.
I talked with some people, and they said the PCV is bad if it sucks the glove. (Also when it's inflates it.) Respectively the consumption is higher than the excepted, with 2-3 liters. |

If the glove is sucked in that shows the pcv is working as designed. The gasses in the engine are being sucked into the intake and burned before being released into the exhaust. If the glove inflates it is not working.

Okay, thank you for your answer.
So, the PCV valve is working as designed. What do you think about the problem? After a higher RPM (eg: late shifts and etc) the rattling stops. I'm 100% sure the problem is the oil pressure. Do you think an engine cleaner fluid can be a solution? I guess Liqui Moly Motor-Clean fluid can be good. |

I don't know about the VVT as I haven't any experience of one being faulty.
The oil ways in the VVT are very small hence the need for 5w/40 oil and why I mentioned that in my earlier post. It does seem strange that you still have the problem after changing the VVT and the solenoid. I use Wurth engine flush every second oil change in mine and it has since 50,000mls - known history from new and Volvo serviced to 90,000mls. But without knowing the history and state of your engine difficult to say whether it would improve things.

I'm using 5w40 also. I will try an engine flushing fluid.
Thank you for your help. |
