If you gave Burdekin a ton of pig iron , he’d end up with a working vehicle!🤨😂

Perfect attitude, none of the bodywork will be that bad that you can't fix it. Starting a resto thread is a good idea and if you have any questions there will normally be someone who can off advice. College up here does night welding courses, if you haven't welded before or for a while getting loads if practice in is a good idea. It's a great hobby, don't set deadlines just enjoy. Always try and do a good job, even on days when it doesn't work out you'll come in the next day and be suprised it's never as bad as you think and you'll have another way to try.

I hadn't welded for about 25 years and bought a MIG (gasless) and couldn't get on with it. Sold it to a friend not long after. Then i needed to do a welding job so bought another and had a few practice sessions on some old panels. Then did the welding job for the MoT - "That'll do" was the comment. A few more jobs in between (including rebuilding a sill on a 75 Tourer) then needed to do some welding on my Jag for the MoT - this time the comment was "Nice job!" so presumably i'm getting better! I wouldn't say i'm perfect by any stretch of the imagination but i have definitely made improvements with practice. One good thing to practice with is making things that make life easier but you're not over fussed how good the welds look - gives plenty of practice and you have something useful at the end. I also found once i got nearer the end of projects like that, i'd see some of the early welds and revisit them to improve them.

I gree about going to evening classes. I was used to stick welding on heavy channel and RSJ, but had no experience with mig or body panels. Went to evening classes for one winter at the local college and learnt the basics of mig and tig. Then picked up some scrap panels to practice on at home. It does need practice, but very easy to pick up the basics and go from there. Clean metal is the key, no use trying to weld on rust.

Well the deed has been done, and it’s now wrapped up nice n warm in my brother in laws barn.
I did try to send a Quick Teaser photo of it on the van, but for some reason it didn’t work. Teaser photo attached, but I will move it outside into daylight to do the photos for new restoration thread if I get a spare day this week or at the weekend. Most pressing though, she needs a name, Margo is rather fitting but obvious, registration is CWW 395H, pity it wasn’t VWW, Alan would think that most fitting 😀😀😀. Suggestions welcome Plus points, nothing fell off on the drive home, hit n miss paperwork over the years, but has got a fair wedge of receipts. Some period brochures were a bonus also. Vendor threw in the boot a good later grille, and various odds n sods. Oh I just love the column change, and large diameter but slender steering wheel, interior is fab for age. One smitten chap.😀 Bad points, so far……….a small puddle of green coolant on the van loadbed once I’d driven it off, engine running rather lumpy. It is taxed n tested, plus I insured it for the princely sum of £7.01 for the month remaining till my Admiral multi car renewal. The taxing as historic was rather nice seeing a £0.00 due👍👍 Perhaps an Italian tune up might be in order at the weekend, however it will definitely be a leisurely tune up as with the 3 speed auto, she’s definitely not going to be tearing up the tarmac. Have I paid over the odds, probably, but I’m a happy chappie👍😀 Cheers Steve |

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter what you paid for it. You have what you wanted and obviously happy with it, that is all that matters. The barn and car look made for each other.

If you decide to go with a more "obvious" name, instead of Margo, what about Bianca? I believe it means white in one language or another (Italian?) and would probably be what Margo would be called if The Good Life was made these days!

Like the look of that as has been said if you're happy with what you paid for her then you've not paid too much[really the cost only comes into the equation if you're after selling on for a profit] it's welding that stymies me as my lock up garage has no electricity laid on and there's no off road parking at my bungalow although I did learn to gas weld 50 yrs ago it must be about 45yrs since I last did any of that.
