Default Bit of Advice

Hi All, i went to change my thermostat as the engine seems to be taking ages to get to temp and for love nor money can i undo the bolts holding the housing on.

I started to undo one and it just began to split, so i got a friend to help and he actually broke the bit, but the star bolt remains undamaged. I even tried when the engine was hot.

I am very reluctant to use an impact screwdriver incase it damaged the housing.

Does anyone have any useful tips or tricks for getting this undone, as i really don't want to drill them out.

cheers
Andy

Dremel a slot across the remains of the bolt and use a screwdriver to get it out. There are modified bolts to replace these as it is a known issue. Before taking the housing off, clamp the hose from the reservoir to the housing so it doesn't empty out over the engine.

Going to sound a bit stupid here, Dremel a slot across the bolt head? As i'm just worried that it's cause serious damaging and i'll have to replace more than just the housing bolts.

Also will have to remove most of the injectors house etc? and where do i get the modified bolts from.

Sorry to ask a load of questions but as it is my daily driver i really can't afford to mess it up.

Cheers
Andy

Get the modified bolts from Volvo, then Dremel across the bolt head.

Insert the bit and then give it a couple of sharp hard raps with a hammer, always works for me.

I had this exact problem. I bought a brand new torx driver and tried to undo one bolt then suddenly... Crack!!! I thought I broke the bolt but luckily I broke the torx driver. lol.
I gave up and handed my car over to Volvo (who made a wonderfully easy job of it).

Lack of patience... (probably)

Oh well.... Hope you get yours done... Somehow.

Hi, just done this last week. I sprayed wd40 on the bolt heads and thermostat housing 4 0r 5 times the day and night before I did it so it had a soak and then made sure I had good access to the bolt heads so that the bit was going in perfectly straight. When I did it next day it took 10 minutes. Hope you get yours sorted.
Rich.
