Where are these fantasy roads with zero hold ups for 35,000 miles at a consistent lick?
I only do long runs in mine, mostly for work, and mostly at less sociable hours sitting at 60mpg (A roads) or 70mph (Dual carriageways/Motorways) on cruise control...

I tend to find traffic helps a bit, as it keeps the average speed lower.

I also keep it meticulously well maintained and fitted a 3.31 final drive (I think the TD Auto had a lower rpm/mph too).

Both the intercooler and final drive swap netted me 1-2mpg.

Mine has averaged more than 45MPG over the last 35000 miles...
He says he wants a 2.3 turbo so I didn't bother mentioning the diesel

He hasn't been back online since his first post so I suspect the 940 idea has been quashed.

Legend has it they bought a VW Kombi to keep with the round edges' german theme of the Audi TT.

"The 940 was to edgy" they stated.

hey guys, thanks for all the replies so far! test drove my first 940 today. 2.0 N/A auto, goodness me. That is a slow car. good god. Think I need a turbo...

it was also a bit ropey. pulled to the right, front right wheel screamed under braking (I assume those two are connected and a easy fix) intermittent fuel gauge and no speedo.

i suspect this is a incredibly stupid question but im going to go for it anyway. are the autos all 4 speed? does this not make them incredibly thirsty or do they have cleaver gearing? ive never actually owned a auto so dont realy know FA about them.

love how it felt on the road though. think I am sold on a 940 now. I've noticed a few of them (including the one I drove today) has bits of rubber hanging off the rear windows? is this a common problem? is it a big deal to fix?

if anybody knows of anyone privately selling a nice 940 turbo (pref auto) let me know!

You can do your knitting in a 2.0 n/asp auto 7/9xx!

Even in n/asp form, the 2.3 is a very different car regardless of auto or manual.
The turbo version is a lot livelier obviously but the B230FK (LPT) develops the same/similar power to a n/asp 2.3 but with more low end torque.

I think (not 100% sure) Luke aka 360beast is soon to be selling a facelift 760 Turbo estate, essentially a 940 HPT before they were called the 940 and with a bit more power than the B230FT. If i'm correct then he's done a lot of restoration work on it recently, doubt it'll be cheap but will be good. :thumbs-up:

Go for a 2.3 litre.

To be fair I have never driven a 2 litre, but find my 1996 B230FK low pressure turbo automatic adequate and a good match.

I like the automatic. So good in traffic and if you floor it does pull ok. Probably around 27mpg, but never measured. Reliable gearbox. Mine has done 208,000miles. Nothing done in 6 years since owned apart from gearbox part drain/refill several times. Like driving a big go cart!

Only 2 litre I would have is the 2 litre turbo.

The B230E is also good. Fitted in 740, 240GLT.

I took Marks slug 2.0 N/A auto to Lancaster for him to carry on driving home my dad was driving it while I was in my works van because free fuel and he had a set of 5 Aurigas for me. At one point after a long incline I was driving at 50mph on the motorway for about 5 minutes waiting for my dad to catch up, I phoned him (on hands free of course) to ask what was going on and he said his foot was to the floor and it didn't get any faster it just maintained speed 😂 so I then phoned Mark and had to tell him the 3 hour journey was going to be a lot longer, without stopping it took us four hours so he was stood outside the train station with a set of wheels on a sat truck for over an hour!

Mine isn't the slowest car I've ever driven, that goes to a diesel L200 my dad used to have, but it is the slowest car I have ever owned.

I still managed to overtake a 72 plate Kia on my maiden voyage with it, and left someone far behind going up Blagdon Hill https://climbfinder.com/en/climbs/bl...l-honiton-road with it last weekend mind.

Perhaps smacking all 4 intake valves knocked some sense into it
