I've explained the maths behind this a few times, a diesel car with a full tank of fuel will create broadly x5-x10 times the thermal energy than a EV car with a full charged batter in destructive thermal runaway.

I'm not a fan of EV's, but that is the fact of it.... EV cars like ICE equivalents have electrical systems that can malfunction and cause fires. It's almost unheard of to get a battery to go into spontaneous thermal runway when the car is parked.

An Apple EV, you just know you'd never be able to charge that anywhere because their plug, whilst being a wonderful and superior thing, wouldn't fit anyone else's charge point

(although in fairness my latest Samsung workphone came with a usbc to usbc lead but no mains adaptor and none of us has one of them either )

And after three months of gentle use the wires will fall out of it and a replacement will cost you eleventy million pounds.

I made a trip up to Shropshire with a colleague on Monday in his company Tesla that he took on from someone who only stayed less than a year so the company had to find a home for it. 175 miles each way from my place, he was another 60ish miles further down.
I was quite interested, but in the end to be honest it was a right pain in the arse - we had to stop on the way up for 20 minutes to 'supercharge' - the first place we tried, the Tesla offices at Cribbs Causeway that he uses regularly, all the chargers were out of order - at Tesla's own offices! Ended up chargining in The Mall car park.
It gets no-where near its stated range when driving at a reasonable pace, so we had to stop for 20 minutes again on the way home. The most frustrating thing about that stop was that we could see the fuel station from the charging point, where people drove in, filled up, and drove out again in 5 minutes. They could have been 25-30 miles further down the road by the time we got going again.
He's doesn't like it, his wife hates it, as soon as its up for renewal he's opting back out again and 'getting a proper car'.

Yes its fast, but once you get over the initial 'shove', you realise that it is very clinical about it, there is no excitement in being able to hit Motorway speed in just a few seconds. (Once that kind of performance becomes the norm, I forsee a lot of teenagers burying themselves in the scenery)
Also there was a fair bit of wind noise, I think the passenger door didn't fit properly.

A D5 would have done the whole journey and some in one hit. Our 2.4T XC70 we may have had to fill up on the way back. It would have been more comfortable too, and because I'm not a billionaire I like my panel gaps to be even.

I was behind a Tesla a few months ago at some traffice lights, think it was a model X, 72 plate, panel gaps were awful.

They're not cars as we know them, they are appliances. And I think people who buy them treat them as appliances, which is fine, but not for you or I.

Other car manufacturers make EV's as good as the petrol/diesel models in terms of quality - Tesla just can't be bothered.

I think the whole 'appliance' thing is true, but it applies to ice as well now. With the rise of wholesale leasing and a growing lack of interest in owning there's a whole multi generational sector of drivers out there who have no pride of ownership in the car they drive. How else would you explain the dominance of the qashkai??

Absolutely this^^^^^

My son was brought up on a diet of Max Power and Grand Theft Auto and was really into his cars as a teenager and early twenties. He even restored a car to concours and was what one might call a young petrol head. He is now a 36 year old with a Skoda on PCP and takes it for a wash at the local scrub and scratch outfit. No longer into detailing or looking after it, to the point he came to see us a few weeks ago and I was working in the garage. His first comment was, ''why are you still b*ggering about with old cars''.

I too find the Juke and the Quashquaiyy or whatever it is to be utter abominations, however from the sales figures clearly Nissan got it right. And this is the thing - the buying public does not behave like it used to, brand loyalty is much reduced, it's all about today.

Another thing I find curious is if I was going to spend say £500 on a watch I would look at a renowned watch manufacturer like Seiko - I wouldn't buy one from a fashion brand like DKNY or MK who have zero history in quality timepieces - yet a lot of people do?
