There's always one.....

Get it done properly and you'll be fine. Most companies don't remove them anymore, they just gut the existing ones.

Modifications wise this increases emissions no more than some guy strapping a bigger turbo to a petrol car.

The ops removed all my posts when posted my success story on here. Be ready for it.

Easy Tiger, I just posted that as up to date reference info. I wish it was legal to do as I'd love to do it and gain the mpg and performance! If the MOT guys can reliably check and fail it as a result of this stupid new law from the Tories then alas it's not to be.

That's the thing though, they can't. The MOTOROLA station does not measure particles just immisions and as long as you gut the existing cat rather than removing it all together and putting a straight through pipe in you are fine.

Enjoy :-)

Not toting any political views here nor defending any, but I didn't think it was a political party "law" governing or not, but in fact another European Union legislation that was being implemented, so regardless who was in power, we would have been stuck with it.

TBH they're all a useless bunch of t0$$ers whichever party. Just blamed the Tories as they didn't make good on the EU referendum which if it did ever happen I'd hope the sensible people of Britain would vote to get out of....... Vacuum cleaners no longer to be above 1500W as of next month and then below 800W in 2 years. Hairdryers below another pi$$ poor limit...... cue Victor Meldrew impression......

So its just a visual inspection then? If you gut the DPF then they'd have to do a mighty fine stealth open and weld procedure to hide it... If thats the case then I may consider it again!

I understand that they open up dpf on the top side so and remove internals close the device and refit so visual inspection of the underside on ramp at mot shows dpf all present and correct!

Eventually the powers will wise up and put additional tests in MOT if at the present its only visual inspection.

It won't be long before the emissions test is like the HGV one. We test for soot particles as well as CO, CO2 etc.
Also, modern trucks with DPFs and other emission reducing devices have warning lights on the dash which, if not dealt with promptly, will reduce the output power of the engine considerably. All this may find it's way onto modern vehicles.
If you remove or tamper with the DPF and the MOT start testing for soot particles, it will fail and you'll end up with a bill for a new one. Not much help if you want to remove it but food for thought.

On the subject of measurement of particulates I'm not sure that DPF's actually work that well - see pic. This 43K mile vehicle hasn't been washed for about 7 weeks and the bumper has a pretty good coating of black soot. Car is almost exclusively used for towing and on long journeys so is worked reasonably hard - it doesn't show any sign of any other problems. Obviously, if you wash your car a bit more frequently you may not see this .

Hi Shimon, i read you posts on the dpf filter for the xc's. i have a xc70 d5(2008) model, my vehicle keeps going into limp mode, loss of power-the feel that the turbo is not functioning. As soon as i switch it off, for 5min, and restart, the problem is gone, but when i drive slowly, the problem re-occurs. Is it possible that this may be the dpf?, and can i remove the dpf completely, and just put in a straigt exhaust pipe. I live in Sa, and is currently on holiday, with a very slow car! Any help, advice would be much appreciated! Thanks Herman

Anyone wants to buy a 11 month old XC90?
Fact is modern diesel engines with DPFs are not suitable for short trips and low mileage. Unless you do a lot of miles and ideally a decent portion at motorway speeds then you are very likely to have problems. Having said this I am told by Volvo that the very latest diesel engines are free of this limitation. Not sure if that is correct or not.
