Hi all, Ive had the same intermittant starting fault on my V50 2.0D for the last 6 months, gradually getting worse. I am a HGV mechanic but have to say i was just about to give up hope of finding the reason for this. Then i read this forum & thanks to "the Clan" i can report that the problem is no more. Sure enough the throttle valve was sticking, although it had to be pressed quite firmly to get it to stick. Just to give you an update on price, a genuine Volvo valve as at 17th Jan 2012 set me back £97+vat.
Thanks Clan, Keep up the good work!!

Yes , one of those hard to find problems and difficult to prove .
These were £60 something a few months ago have they gone up THAT much ! Volvo Parts prices went up 2.5% at christmas but ..

I have the same problem with my s40. When it's cold the engine goes off after a few seconds. Usually it takes few tries to start and sometimes after few it doesn't start at all. Thank I have to wait few minutes and to start again. I removed the throttle and cleaned the valve, it didn't stick and it didn't help. I removed the vacuum hose which steers the valve, so it supposed be open but I had the problem any way. So I presume the throttle is not the problem. Any ideas?

you may have air bubbles in the clear pipe that goes over from the fuel filter above the alternator to the fuel pump on the othe rside , gget someone to start it and see if there is a stream of bubbles going through the clear pipe and then clear after 5 mins .. If so the fuel filter housing can draw in air .

Thanks Clan
I will check it but I didn't mention that the problem started when the outside temperature started going down. What would be the relation between temperature and air bubbles?
I thought the EGR can be the problem but I unplugged it and disconnected vacuum hose from throttle but it didn't help.
Any way I will do as you said.

I believe I have the same problem developing on my 2.0D (Euro 4) V50 - I get intermittent non-starting with no messages and then perfect running after switching off and trying again.

Can someone advise the correct part name / number (Throttle value, throttle housing?) and a good on-line supplier please.

Many thanks,

Pete

Thanks and noted.

Did you try to get the work done and TB replaced under warranty as I have been advised that it should be covered (up to 3 yrs)?

I'm surprised the dealers are is struggling with this , its a known issue and has a bulletin on it .. Change the plastic throttle housing and see how it goes ...
Is this problem just with diesels? I have similar symptoms on a 2.4i petrol - could it be the same thing?
