K-jet is a superb system! The B230E is designed to run on 98 octane and IIRC my handbook says 133BHP.

What year is yours?

P.S. I just looked at the '89 sales brochure and both the B200E and B230E requires 98 octane. The B230E has 133BHP ECE at 5400rpm

So "B230E" is not a single engine version then, but must cover various specifications according to market and year.

What is the C/R on the '89?

John

I was just poking a little fun at Volvo's use of K-Jet well into the EFI era...

Interesting that it ran fine on 98, Nick. I wouldn't have expected it to affect idle noticeable...more full load conditions.

Thinking about it, the compression drop probably happened around 86/87, so I'm guessing your car runs less ignition timing (at full load), John.

And Rupert...we're talking about smoothness of idling, not power Also, with the precision of EFI comes improved fuel efficiency...

cheers

James

Yeah, absolutely John. That's the same with most 80s-era redblocks. For example, the B200K and E in the 360 came in various flavours....full codes being B200KO and the like...I can't remember any more off the top of my head, but they're quoted on the under-bonnet sticker.

cheers

James

Ok, found my handbook which specifies power in DIN where the sales brochure had ECE. Handbook confirms 98 octane but says 129 HP DIN at 5250rpm.

Comp. ratio is 10.3

well it wasnt hugely noticable just a little "blip" every now and again when sitting stopped at lights or whatever.

perhaps the non-uk cars were specified in such a way that they could deal with lesser fuels?

thats all i can think of

Nick

Undoubtedly so. If memory serves correctly, the 80s-era UK-market cars were set up for 4-star, which was ~96 octane. The switch to unleaded (95) brought about the drop in power seen in most models around 1987 for the UK market.

I forget exactly what 240s got ignition-wise (certainly older carb models like the one I had were pretty basic - just breakerless, essentially), but 740s with K-Jet ran ECU-driven EZK ignition, if memory serves correctly. That featured a knock sensor, and would pull timing if you put lower-spec fuel in.

cheers

James
