The economic value to you off an old car can be well in excess of it's market value. Also can be far cheaper to repair than suffer depreciation on a new car

I'd assumed the thread was about keeping an older Volvo with high mileage going as your main car, probably a RWD as they're simpler. I don't count a V70 P2 as an old Volvo in this context. I'm glad you're keeping the 740's on the road. After I retired I couldn't justify the expense of keeping the 745 together with the V70 plus the space they've take up, especially as I'd acquired the Sprite by then (which is zero tax and no MOT). Regards.

My 1986 C plate 745GLa has been in regular use (that's weekly regular use) since it was purchased by my Wife's Father when it was 6 months old - that is 29.5 years.

Why are you in denial about the poor quality of 740 interiors, especially the plastics and roof lining ? Everyone understands this so don't I understand your dogmatic stance and total refusal to accept this fact. You've been peddling this for years.

Biggest weakness for 740s... interiors, end of.

I quite like the vinyl covered hard foam dashboard.
Apart from a couple of small cracks near the windscreen, the plastics were fine in the two 740s I've had.

So the 740 officially died in 1992, though by then it was pretty much exactly a 940? Who cares? My 88 740 is amazingly good for a car of it's age, not perfect but pretty good in my opinion.
However you choose to look at it, these cars do well.

Hi All

Unfortunately at the moment we tend to live in a world were four hours labour can write off a high percentage of classics, in truth it's not the value of the car but what it's actually worth to you, my 26 year old 240 can be repaired time after time and in the past seven years I must have spent ten times what it cost me to buy, but I had spent years looking for one and if I bought a newer car the technology would dictate that I would forever be held go ransom by dealers and garages to get work done I class that as a false economy. I also find newer cars far less interesting a modern car may as well be a microwave or a vacuum cleaner, as they have all become more or less soulless consumer goods, instead of objects of desire to get the blood pumping every time turn the key.

Peddling for years - probably mention when relevant, denial, what tosh.

I have 3 x 700s at this time and have owned another 3 - that's 6 in total.

I'll give you there's a headlining issue but it is churlish to criticise a 30 year old car for a problem like this with a relatively simple fix (one of my 1986 cars has a perfect original headlining). All of the interior plastics of the cars I have and have had are in fine condition.

Everyone understand this - wind your neck in.

Question, why do 240s and 940s have a higher proportional survival rate than 740s ?
