Simontie,

There are a number of reasons you can get the message for so you do need to have codes read to ensure you fix the right part. First check is the axle bolts as this will cost you nothing if they have come loose.

Well, as stated, guess you're ok for a certain time as Volvo will cover it. Mine is a 56 plate and MRG will have it monday to confirm ABS unit or pump.

Whatever, if that's the case, as car is purchased under 6 months ago, I will be going the OFT route as dealer that sold car only did a visual check, no diag. and therefore cannot prove fault wasn't there when I bought the car on 6th Feb.

I won't be covered, that's for sure, by Volvo. It's just disgusting the car was put up by a subsidiary of Snows group in Hampshire.

Would I buy a car from them??? Would I ------!!!!

Recently had the anti skid in my 08 plate c30. Needed a new hydraulic unit and brake control module. Volvo gave me a 50% goodwill so came to £408 all in, and my car is 5 yrs 9 months old.

Just joined up as my Dad's V40 1.6L 56 plate is showing this message.
His local garage that does the servicing have said they don't want to investigate further in case they damage something and pointed at the main dealer.

So he ran Mill Volvo in Stockton and they've quoted him £190 to investigate the problem.
That is apparently just to read the codes !!!!

This car has unfortunately spent a lot of time with the dealer despite only being a 78K miler. It's not exactly been reliable.
Last job was a reported charging problem - I hear this can be a factor with anti skid fault ?!?

He's over my way (Warrington) next weekend so I'm going to take a look at the physical side of things. Clean up any rust, & dirt in the sensors, check the ECU wiring. I maintain my own cars, just don't own a Volvo else I'd have the scan tool.
Got a lot of reading to do on this thread to compile the check list ready for that task.

Hopefully wil be able to get in contact with one of the local members with a scan tool (but cannot yet PM them as need 30 posts ) and get a better idea of where the fault may lie.

I'll be going right past your doorstep on Wed or Thu (9th/10th) of April. If the car was to be available then I'd drop by and read your codes for you as I'm popping in to Widnes.

You say the car is a 56 plate so is it a V50 or S40?

£190 for a code read is disgraceful! You want to report that to Volvo UK.

Thanks for the offer. Sadly, my dad is over in Middlesbrough, so only coming over for the weekend (Mothers day) to see the grandchild.

Shows how much I know then
It's the estate. He told me it was a V40.

I have no doubt he will be following up with them regarding the quote.

Going through this thread it seems Mill Volvo have a reputation:

Quote:
MILL VOLVO NEWCASTLE that i was told the mot only had 6 months left and that they said as part of the deal they would not service it now as it was due same time as mot and they would do both together free of charge in 6 months, needless to say when the car went in and they came at me with a bill for over £400 (it failed mot and part was not covered )i infromed them that it was ment to be free as per sales agreement, they held my car for 2 days till i parted with money.

I paid £78 to Cardiff Volvo for the code read, so £190 is crazy!!

MRG will do it again on monday to confirm ABS unit or sensor, and I don't think they will charge anywhere near that! Plus a discount on parts and labour available.

Well thanks for all the advise it did the same this morning when she was on her way to work so when she finally got there she called Volvo assist, the came and picked it up then took it to the local Volvo dealer still waiting for them to call me back after leaving several messages I won't mention any names just yet as Volvo have given me a car for the next few day while they check it over but would have liked a call just to confirm the issues or that they had it, did the alternator 4 months ago just when pop local garage did the job £300 it was easier than me doing it I would have to say so far I am not fully impressed with the s40 we were thinking of changing it to the new v40 but might just think that through again we will see what happened after they call back. V40 was an estate but V50 took over from V40 in April 2004, but you said your dad car was a 56 plate which should make it a V50 and not a V40.

By luck I will also be going past Middlesbrough too as I head up the A19 if this will be of any help?

All the best,

If by chance you were passing by on Thursday, he'd welcome with open arms and a cup of tea for sure !
Just about a mile and a half off the A19.
Please send me an email with your contact details:
dave@ "my username" .com

It's been scanned by the local garage and it's showing the 130 and 131 codes, suggesting it is the pump.
Does the DVIA tool go into even more depth than that and confirm it's the pump or realistically, does knowing those two codes mean it's time to ship it off to the ECU doctors without further faff ?
