what do you mean (yes, very rare)?

what should I be looking for.

There is a weight on axle beam but no tank, I will have a look underneath on the weekend at the exhaust.

I am just buying a 20008 '57 plate V50 with the 8th digit of the VIN as a 4. It looks as though I may be lucky and have no DPF. But, i have read all the comments with interest and know from experience with other cars how expensive this can be.

I did a search to try and find a picture of a backaxle beam with a DPF on it but to no avail. Interseyingly, I did find this instead.

This company will remove the DPF, modify the pipework and change the ECU settings. I haven't spoken to them, but it may be the a possible answer to the expense of having a DPF changed. May be worth investigation by members faced with this potential problem.
you shouldn`t have a dpf

Smile Filter Change

I had my particulate filter changed at 40k under warranty (car 2 years old) it was clogged. Makes a mockery of the eco Drive 1.6D, when you add it all up to the £1100 service at 75K, not economical at all.

Hi All,

I've got interesting one:
In the early days of ownership (before all the paranoia about dpf... of my 06 V50, just after a magical 75k on the clock a DPF warning light came on. I rushed to the dealer, wanting some very needed advice. Of course the quote was near a £1000, so I decided to go to independent one, which asked about my style of driving (90% motorway) and for a small fee reset the error. 3 years down the line and everything is running smoothly.
When searching through this forum I found loads of threads about DPF. Out of curiosity I've checked my VIN and under the bonnet and guess what? - it looks like I haven't got a filter!? 8th digit is 4 and only one pipe connected to throttle body. I'll check the other signs of having a dpf tomorrow (tank and sensor) but it seems that volvo dealer wanted some cash for nothing... ehhh.

BTW - does air in the fuel line when running mean trouble?

Thanks

I have to correct the last point on first page of this forum. It looks as if Volvo customer services do not have much of a clue what car does or does not have a DPF. I had an e-mail back from them saying it does have a DPF (after quoting them my VIN number) only for my own mechanic to tell me it does not have one (it has /*not*/ been removed either). My car is a 2008 V50 2.0SE. I will count my self lucky.

I will complain to Volvo about this and ask them to publish some better advice to settle this once and for all.

In the meantime, the best thing to do is get under the car and have a good look. Behind the front wheels and the bow shaped support, going down the 'exhaust well', you will see either a long cylinder (which I think is the silencer/muffler) or you may see a shorter but 'fatter' cylinder with a heat cover on with some pipes coming from it. If you see the later, you will need to start saving up, that is a dpf. Otherwise keep your car for as long a possible.

Just to make you laugh I have an old v50 brochure for uk models where the dpf was an optional extra and you could pay £500 to have the factory install one for you...lol
