Right the seal is out
& thanks Brian you did explain yourself perfectly. I tried to lever it with various sized screwdrivers, but failed. So I used the 'nail puller' part of a small hammer as a sort of make shift seal-hook, with some doubled-up corrugated cardboard to protect the metal where the bearing sits. I've tried to take a pic of how I did this as my 'method' maybe of use in the future for others. I really need three hands to 'mock up' for the pic, but hopefully you'll get the idea So next job is to head to the scrappy to source a replacement 1/2 shaft with a decent bearing on it. Maybe tomorrow, depends if the yard is open on a Monday, very many places here take Sunday & Monday off.............. Will update soonest. Thanks again for the support, this type of thing is really where the forum 'comes into it's own'

Well done Paul!Good use of the clawhammer. Now you have it out keep it with you when visiting the yard as you may find a scrap piece of tube to help refit the new seal?Give yourself a pat on the back from me,A lot of these jobs are quite easy to do but explaining them is half the battle.Thats why I suggested a how to practical session at the BKV's,So that the easier jobs could be taught in a hands on way, would mean using a donor car trailered though.
Let us know how you get on Regards Brian. PS your experience and photoes will help someone else out someday. |

I remember one of Matt's lecturers at college saying that claw hammers are NOT a mechanics tool they are for carpenters. Matt carried on using one for appropriate jobs and you seem to have added another to the list of 101 jobs for a mechanics claw hammer.
Glad you are getting there. Mike

Hi Mike it's a case of adaptability when it comes to doing jobs like this.I've been mending my own cars since I first got one wayback,And even with my dad when I was only ieght years old it was a vauxhall super deluxe. The big ends had started knocking so WE both stripped out the sump and took the head off,We put new big end shells in but after putting it all back together it wouldn't turn over on the key?So we got a mate to tow it around the estate until it gave in and started.I think the shells were to tight,,,But it carried on running for years.
I only buy tools as and when I need them but still occasionally improvise by grinding down old spanners mainly whitworth when I need to.I scour bootsales for quality british made cold chisels and even trowels as the new ones are thicker and not as hard or flexible as the old hardened ones. If it works then great pass it on for us to learn.Thats what makes this site so good in the first place.I just wish I could get and do the how to's instead of taking piccies and never getting it done.Mike your how toos are a well known resource so be proud you have helped out so many. Kind regards Brian. |

Well done. You must feel deservedly proud of having got to that point.
Don't forget to pull out the bearing bit from inside the casing too when you get a replacement. You will be able to test the feel and the play before you dismantle, if it is an old-style breakers. When you get the complete assembly out, try putting the shell back into position over the bearing and squeezing it against the retaining ring, and you will see that the end float is entirely determined by the tolerances of those parts, and there is no opportunity for adjustment with shims. So you will know before you buy it that you have a good one. I like the claw hammer tool. On a bigger scale, the curled end of a wrecking bar is good too. On both, you can make more elaborate pullers by making use of the slot and a long bolt. Good luck with the next stage ! |

Well, been to the yard & worked in hailstones! Not too bad though.
The donor car having just removed the piece. A 240 D24 model. There was a saloon next to it with less miles, but the disc would'nt shift Closer shot: The bearing seems to run smoothly & is still packed well with grease, so fingers crossed on that score. Need to wait for the seal to arrive before going any further with this. I'm 120€ lighter too But I did take a GLT type front grill, my GL one is a bit tatty & also a set of horns from the 240 to fit to my daughters Pug307SW. She keeps moaning that her 'parp' is more of a 'peep', so I thought I get her a proper set! lol.
